Why do old people

I'm sorry but I think that is BS. For all the crap that older people talk about the students on this site, you would hope that the old people could back it up. Strategic cheering? Lol. Come on man. If your strategy is to stand up twice a game, you're doing a fantastic job.

So, what do you think the TV commentators mean when they say we have some of the smartest fans?

We have the same argument in football. Some think the best fans are the ones who stand for the whole game and yell like crazy on every play. Some think the fans who stand and cheer louder at strategic times are best. I'm glad we have both.

They say that because they say the same regurgitated crap every freaking game.

Nothing to do with old people or young people.

Why is there a student in the front row of the student section wearing a solid purple shirt? He has worn the same shirt back to back games?

.. yes you can tell I am one of the "old" people as for some reason this bothers me for some odd reason. The grey and black Iowa State shirts is one thing but purple with no Iowa State logo?

Seriously? Just not even close and wrong....

Under 4 timeout is when we congregate on the concourse... under 1 minute is when we actually leave the arena.

What did old people do during the Iowa game? My son's student ticket got him concourse standing for that game since he had class until 5:00 on the Friday of dead week and was required to pick up a take home portion of the exam then.

Why back in our day, we didn't have any fancy Niangs or Ejims. We had Bryan Heger and Fallencheck and Uthoff .... AND WE LIKED IT!

No cell phones to check with our buddies if they were going to the game. If you wanted to hook up with your friends, you posted a note on a bulletin board at The Hub a week before the game and hoped they saw it.

And forget about Clone Cones. We could get three things from the concession stands. Pop, popcorn and polio.

Needless to say, pop and popcorn were the most popular items.

Pure gold!

Yet, it is interesting when they say it. Often, it is when we have gone on a dry spell and the fans sense the need to encourage the team to make a play. And the old folks have stood up and started cheering even though our team hasn't done anything good for a while.

You will probably say that if we stood and yelled the whole game, we wouldn't have the dry spells, but that is just silly.

I look at it this way, the standing, loud, rowdy student section forms a baseline for the crowd. The AV guy, the band, the cheerleaders, and the old folks provide the nuanced cheering that matches the flow of the game. And at the end of a close game, the fantastically loud student section sets the tone for everyone to get loud, such as with a strategic Cyclone Power cadence. However, we don't want to do Cyclone Power all game, but only when strategic.

I think that was the one game that I remember where people actually stayed in their seats... I mean considering they had no where to stand. I can only imagine the amount of angry letters Jamie had to sift through when they finally reached his desk the following Tuesday...

I spent 4 years in the pep band and marching band.

If I could stand all game, every game, I would. But I would get yelled at by everyone behind me.

Because we actually want to watch the game, and not block the view of anyone else! That, grasshopper, is what is known as manners. Try practicing some occasionally.

What is a little frustrating to me is when we have the crowd going crazy, and the opposing coach calls a time out. And then by the time out is over everyone is back to sitting down. If you're a smart fan base you get right back up and be just as loud as you were right before the time out. That is why the opposing coach called the time out, and you're giving him just what he wants when you sit back down. This isn't just an old person issue though its for everyone.

Fill the student section every night and you'll have the right to complain...drops microphone.

I can yell just as loud sitting down. :arghh:

Hilton has a national reputation for intelligent fans, not fans who stand the most. It is when the fans rise to their feet and get loud when the team is struggling or needs a lift that has earned us the reputation. We have fantastic strategic cheering that players and coaches say really makes a difference.
The old guys are saving themselves when they are really needed.

As for the young CAers, you need to get in the minds of the opponents when they shoot free throws. That is your Job One. Every point makes a difference in the BPI. Just remember that.

Yeah, the serious answer is that you feel like a ***** for standing up and not letting people behind you, that aren't comfortable standing, see the game.
This, and while I'm probably not as loud when I'm sitting, it's not like I'm sitting there quietly. I'm still cheering.

Our fans are great at being loud as **** when it really matters.

OP is right though, when we go on a run we get loud and when the opposing coach calls timeouts we get STOKED and go nuts, and then as soon as play begins again (this is where it bothers me a bit) the whole crowd immediately sits down unless it is the last minute or two of a close game. At least stand up and cheer until the other team scores or we do something bad. The cut in participation in the game is absolutely immediate when the ball is inbounded.

There is no stadium where coaches get more bang for their buck calling TO after a run than in Hilton.

That being said, our fans show up way better than almost all fanbases, almost never stay quiet in an important late game situation, and we cheer in support during a dry spell better than anyone IMO.
