Who will replace Brandtner?

I'll bet you're entire life savings that KVC red shirts.

I've never seen either punt... but I'll go off of what is posted by the coaches thus far...

Kuehl is the #1 right now.... so I would bet on him being the punter if we had a game tomorrow. Luckily we don't so maybe our punter will change between now and then, but that's the most recent depth chart.

You guys don't listen to Rhoads much do you? He said on the radio last week that Vander Kamp will be the punter and that is why they brought him in.

cybassociation is right. It's a lock

I'm ok with that. I mean we gave him a scholarship, so I assume he's pretty good... but my point is... a depth chart came out just recently, and he's not listed there as the starter. That's all I'm saying...

And Tony Yelk was listed at #1 for several weeks in a row...and never saw the field.

Depth charts are among the most useless pieces of information out there, especially the pre-spring, post-spring, and pre-fall versions.

Really? It wasnt a 50+ yard touchdown pass on 3rd and long that did it at K-State? Or the lack of defense at Kansas? These are just two of multiple examples from each game. Coach Rhoads said it best at Nebraska, it takes a team to win. It also takes a team to lose. Using your logic, it was special teams that won the game at Nebraska.

Blocked field goals/Pats in the KU, KSU, and NU game. So special teams had struggled a lot this past year...

Defenses are occassionally going to give up a big play or two. It happens. But just flat out missing short field goals, getting kicks blocked, etc. are the types of plays that get you beat. ISU needs to put just as much emphasis on special teams as they do offense and defense. Iowa has done that for a long time. In a lot of the close games the Hawks have won over the last 10 years, special teams often were the key unit. Whether it was Kyle Schlicher nailing 5 field goals against Minnesota in a 29-27 win in 2004, Miguel Merrick blocking a punt against LSU that Sean Considine returned for a TD in the Capital One Bowl, D.J. Johnson returning a blocked PAT for what seemed like an insignificant 2 points in an OT victory at Penn State in 2002, or Ryan Donahue totally changing the field position battle by pinning teams inside the 10, special teams have played an enormous role in Iowa's success in the last decade.

If ISU can get itself to where they make those kinds of plays consistently, they could be looking at a lot more 8 and 9 win seasons, rather than 6 or 7 wins.

KVC has not completed a single practice session with the coaches yet. Of course they can't put him in as the starter. Wait until the first depth chart after practice has begun - he'll be the starter.

Exactly. While the defense gave up the big play, the offense came back and scored the last second touchdown. It was the special teams that prevented from extending the game further and giving the Cyclones the opportunity to win the game in overtime.

As for the Kansas game, the first three extra points were missed. Two by Iowa State, one by Kansas. If Iowa State makes those extra points, the Cyclones would not have to go for two later in the game. They converted one 2-point conversion, and failed to convert a second one late in the fourth quarter. Make all of the extra points and later in the game you're setting up for the game-tying or game winning field goal from the Jayhawk 8 yard-line instead of having to go for it on 4th and 4 from the 8.

What about Powell,Behnkendorf, or Norton... We have 5 guys on the roster, all of which could compete for the starting position. I've seen each of them punt, and all of them are solid. I'll be watching for a great battle during practices to find the starter. Kuehl punted very well when I watched in Spring practice, but Van Der Kamp will have a chance as well as he is on scholarship. Powell is a left footed threat that could be used to our advantage as well. Behnkendorf was a transfer to the squad last season as Norton transfered to the team in the spring. Anyone else have more information on these guys?

these 3 aren't even in the mix. norton might not even be on the team anymore. hasnt been here all summer and word is he might not be invited back onto the team simply because he can't compete

Hadn't heard that. I thought all of them were in the running for the punting job. As of the new roster, all are still listed.

Let's try it this way:

Special teams were in a position to win games at Kansas and KSU last year, and they failed to get the job done.

I would completely agree with that. But I will still contest that football games are won and lost as a team. There were plenty of opportunities in both games for both offense and defense to win that game. Also, I will stand by the photo I posted after the K-State game showing the kick was illegally blocked (using leverage from a teammate). That does not change the outcome of the game though. I think Grant has put the hours in during the offseason, and has gotten his head right in the past year to have a complete turnaround this season. Whether he does or doesnt is up to him.
