Who will be the mentor for Fred?

It will be the most important hire for Coach. It is for all the marbles. With Floyd assisting the search and Pollard all in this could be just as important as hiring Hoiberg.

This just seems really weird. Fred could work out great, there's no way at this point to tell. But I'd be pretty freaked out if my AD hired a men's basketball coach who'd never even coached a junior high team, much less anything else.

Pollard clearly likes to shoot from the hip, but part of me thinks this hire is more about his own ego and generating buzz than finding the right person to guide the MBB team into the future.

Granted, I'm an Iowa fan and Barta is as boring as it gets. I'm probably just conditioned to live in a more vanilla world. Hope it works out, Freddy's a class act all the way.

I don't know Gonzo. If you listen to the guy he sounds like a coach. He's confident and I think he's ready.

I don't know how much you've followed Fred over the years. When you think about someone who is the typical coach, you think of Fred. We all always thought that it was a shame that he got into the front office business rather than the coaching business. We didn't know he's been planning on coaching for a long, long time.

ric wesley?

It doesn't have to be an Iowa State guy. I'd look at a 45-50something former head coach that for whatever reason got out of the business. You obviously don't want someone who has completely failed, but someone that got booted at some point would be fine.

If I was to guess whose opinion and advice, FH seeks out on a regular basis, I would say Flip Saunders.

Based on the Tim Floyd connection and a guy with Big 12 experience is former K State head coach Jim Wooldridge. Ric Wesley though could be a possibility. I'm still trying to find some other guys that make a lot of sense that I think we could get for the amount of money we probably have to spend. Terry Carroll is another guy that I definitely wouldn't count out!

It's gotta be a guy with no urge to take over or move. See the Keno/Tom Davis set up at Drake.

I feel pretty good based on those supporting this hire he will find the perfect guy with experience to come in for a few years.

Since your a Hawk fan, I was wondering if you give me your idea of why Hawk fans hate Pollard so much. I have absolutely no opinion on Barta, or whoever was AD at Iowa before him. Not trying to flame you in any way, I just don't understand
why Hawk fans care about our AD so much.

...the billboard...

My opinion why Iowa fans hate Jamie - he's exactly what they wish they had, someone who doesn't take the safe road all the time, someone who is not vanilla and will say what he thinks. Jamie is not afraid to stick his neck out there for something he believes in, Barta is mister safe and conservative.

With Fred & Grayer on the Staff

Guys like Wesley, Hallihan, etc IMO are not an option.

Fred needs to find a recently fired head coach. Lutz of Charlotte is exactly the type of guy he should hire. Guy was recently a head coach so his recruiting contacts are still there, he was a head coach so his X&O's should be strong and he can take some of the "non-basketball" load off of Fred.

I would imagine Fred would also look for a guy he is familar with and similar philosophies.

Some coaches fired this spring:
Lutz - Charlotte
Wainright - DePaul
Roberts - St Johns
Kent - Oregon
Gaudio - Wake Forest

Wesley may be a great guy & coach- but IMO a DII coach isn't going to have the recruiting contacts a former BCS conference coach would.

I can see why people that are not ISU fans see it this way. Totally understandable. But if you are an ISU fan, you would see it differently I think, there are unique challenges at ISU and we need someone who really understands that, embraces it and wants to be here....really one of those things that is hard to explain unless you see it and feel it.

I can't speak for all Iowa fans, but to an extent I think you may be right. I think the billboard thing was pretty ridiculous, but didn't take it very seriously. I can't stand trash talk, so those kinds of moves I just think are cheesy. I think with Pollard and Barta you're looking at two extremes. Pollard has no problem getting in your face and making brash moves. He seems to be motivated by what will make a splash and make fans happy. So in that respect, I probably do envy that a bit. Barta's approach to things is much more understated and conservative. He doesn't seem to be at all concerned about what the fans want, evidenced by the McCaffery hire. The funny thing is neither has had a ton of success with their moneymaking programs. Pollard's move with Chizik completely backfired, Cael bailed on him, and McD was a failed experiment. Men's basketball at Iowa has been a complete dumpster fire, and you can't really attribute football success to anything Barta's done. He did bring in Brands, which was big.

Honestly, I'd probably prefer an AD who's more in the middle. Barta puts me to sleep, and while I do like that Pollard at least puts some fire into things, I don't like it at the extreme to which he seems to take it.

Hmmmmmm.

I think I have to agree with Miller and Deace on this one.
Fred needs a Norm Parker type mentor.
A guy who has been everywhere, (and has seen it all) knows the game inside and out, and has no aspirations to move to another situation, or to improve his own station.
Someone who just loves the game of basketball, for the love of the game and coaching young men.

I don't think or feel that "young and hungry" is the proper fit.

Johnny Orr has forgotten more about basketball than many of the young, up-and-coming, "hungry" coaches that have agenda's which involve their OWN future.
Someone that can go to Fred after a game, and in private, tell him what he NEEDS to hear, not what someone thinks Fred WANTS to hear.

Just my opinion of course (well,............. really Deaces' and Millers')
By the way, if you haven't heard this morning's pod cast of Steve and John's show,
I think you would find both hours to be compelling.

GO CYCLONES

Bobby Lutz would be a tremendous assistant coach hire if he can pull it off. He has ties to the east coast and 12 years of head coach experience. He took five teams to the NCAA tournament and three to the NIT. He would be a great compliment to the rest of the staff. I'm interested to see some other names that come up through Larry Brown and Tim Floyd but this is about the best I have seen so far!! Plus he has the world's greatest mustache so I mean come on!!
