I hope it's very even scoring. My concern with a one and done like Biliew, he will want to prove he is NBA ready. Does that mean he takes 15 shots a game, robbing others of shots they would have made? I know nothing about him, and maybe that's not him at all. But it's just the way I think about these guys that know they are bound for the League.
I was very impressed by the way he carried himself at the WeWill camp last week. Other players had gone up between sessions to get their chic fil-a box meals and he hung with the campers for longer. Not a knock on the other players, Omaha had a longer line but he was generous with his time. Maybe inhaled his meal in 7 minutes.

He feels like a great fit

Joel Embiid was one and done and took 6 shots a game. The NBA usually knows what a guy is capable of.

A good wing comparison might be Isaac Okoro. Was a top 40 prospect, only averaged 13 points on less than 30% shooting from 3 in his one year at Auburn, and still was drafted #5 based on his defense, athleticism, and high ceiling. Obviously Biliew is more highly touted as a recruit, and is bigger so he's probably an NBA 3/4 as opposed to Okoro as a 2/3, but there are some similarities.

I think it ends up being one of the new guards, but out of the gate I think someone with more experience at this level starts out hot. Someone like Tre King thru the break. By the end of the season, Gilbert would be my guess just from what we hear about his ability to play defense which means he'll be getting a lot of minutes.

For the 3rd year in a row, the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts, making it difficult to accurately guess who will lead the team in scoring. I bet we'll have a few around 10-12 ppg.

Gilbert -
Bielew -
King -
Lipsey -
C. Jones -
Paveletzke -
Momcilovic -
Watson -
R. Jones -
Ward -

Here's how I would list out the scoring from top to bottom, however I left out how much each would score because it was WAY too high in terms of total ppg by the team. I was in the high 80's and I just don't think that's possible with TJ's defensive style. I'd guess we'll be more in the high 70's (last year we were at 67.6 ppg). If someone wants to fill it in, go ahead.

Tough exercise. As others have said, and I agree with, could see nobody over 13 ppg and a bunch kind of grouped between 7-12 ppg. Gilbert and King I think will be closer to the 12-13 ppg range, and Bielew, Paveletzke and C.Jones will be in the next group 9-10 ppg. Lipsey and Momcilivic will round out the low tier at 7-8 ppg. R. Jones and Ward will probably be 4-6 ppg. Watson will probably average 1 or 2 again.

Washes out to approximately 74-86 range if I'm doing the math right.

I think people are underestimating Jones scoring ability based off of film I've seen.

Yeah I can agree with that too. I'm optimistic about Watson but I may be a year early.

I feel like there are qay more bball thread than fball threads recently. Are we back to being just a basketball school? :jimlad:
If the Football team comes out and performs great and wins games...they'll get their pub.

I want to like Watson. And I do love things about him, as he seems to have a lot of bounce and high end potential athletically. But I don't see a very refined basketball player. At least not yet. Could be a year early, like you said, and hopefully we do see it come to fruition at ISU.

I definitely agree. He needs to get his handle under control, shoot above 30% from the corner three and he has to be better at the FT line. If those things can happen he'll continue to see playing time.

There's going to be too much talent at his position though to where if he doesn't improve in those areas, he's going to get left behind.

I think his style of play tends to lend itself to TJ's typical guard-led scoring.

He slashes well and can pull up from three.

My model is Brockington and Holmes with a smattering of Grill.

Right you are. On one hand, he is somewhat promising and showed potential. On the other hand, they brought in Kayden Fish and Jelani Hamilton who will both be candidates to eat into his minutes if he can't hit shots or be a competent offensive threat. I was surprised Demarion played as much as he did last season, just given that it was 4 on 5 when we had the ball. He did not have to be guarded and most teams knew that once Big 12 play got going.

Feels like it will be a guard. Tre will be interesting if he plays the 5. Last year almost all of his offense came from beating up smaller 4s on the block. He didn't do much against guys who were bigger than him. I really hope he plays in the paint instead of trying to shoot jumpers.

I'm fine with him shooting jumpers just so long as it's a short corner wide open shot due to his man having to help to save a layup. When Tre would back his guy down 10 ft away from the basket and put up a fadeaway, that's when I'd get frustrated.

Absolutely, but with that being said, the only thing scoring wise he needs to be able to do is knock down the corner three. If he can shoot say above 30% from there and also crash the boards, he'll be a positive on the offensive side. Defensively I think he's going to continue to excel where he already was showing great promise at as a true freshman.

Tre showed that he has a little bit of touch in the mid range and even from 3 (although certainly wouldn't want him putting up a large volume from there). If that type of stuff is available for him again this season, I hope he continues to take it. As far as him struggling against bigger guys, I think that was fairly expected considering he was away from competitive basketball for 2+ years, plus the gigantic step up in competition from the Atlantic Sun to the Big 12. In general, I would say if you are smaller and trying to win a fight on physical strength alone, you are going to fail most times, unless the bigger guy is just a stiff with no defensive acumen like a Luka Garza, of which there really aren't many in the Big 12. Most big guys in the Big 12 are also going to be more athletic and have at least an iota of defensive ability.

All of this to say, I actually hope Tre doesn't try too hard and force the issue down low. He is 6'7'' and won't win many paint battles against guys that are 6'9''+ and just as big/athletic. I would like to see more of his face-up game than his back-down game. He could probably take some of the bigger guys off the dribble.
