I still say we shouldn't compare Dan with Wayne or Wayne with Dan. It's just not fair. It's not an apple to apple comparison. A lot of people will say Dan while others will say in Wayne's favor.

Personally I don't think Wayne is the man for the job he got paid for. Yes, he took us to NIT and NCAA - but that's just not enough! Give Dan the equivalent guys Wayne had for making it to a big 12 championship or a bowl game, Dan would take them to a bowl game (I don't care if it's in Shreveport or San Antonio) 5 out of 6 tries. I taped every single televised bb game last year, and I see no improvement from game # 1 to game # 20. There was no direction from Wayne in terms of utilizing the talents in hand and making a run for the conference standings and anything for that matter. Dan didn't do a good coaching job last year either but if you ask me I will say Dan can be a successful D-1 head coach and Wayne is anything but that.

This has nothing to do with comparing the two, only for the sake of the title of the thread. It is the perception that there seems to be on this, and many other sites.

Wayne was here for three years, and when you look at the history of Iowa State basketball the only coaches who were more successful were Tim Floyd, and Larry Eustachy. So, historically then Wayne measured up wins and losses wise. Look I am not here to make the case that Wayne Morgan should still be the coach, or that he was a great coach, or anything like that. I just am trying to make the case that there is a serious lack of consistency in the way that these two men are portrayed, and that it is not necessarily fair.

Very interesting!

Clearly, all of McCarney's personal "PR" efforts continue to influence many Cyclone fans into thinking that he was some sort of great coach. Obviously, the numbers do not support this. Just as clearly, it would appear that Wayne's lack of "PR" skills hurts the overall impression of him as a coach.

I look at it this way...coaches are hired to recruit, coach (X&Os), and run the program.

McCarney did a lousy job of recruiting, was a poor game day coach, and had trouble running the organization (he is responsible for the staff he hires). McCarney gets a 0 for 3.

Morgan was a fine recruiter, was a poor X&O coach, and had trouble running the organization (scheduling fiasco). Morgan gets a 1 for 3.

I'm glad we don't have to deal with either anymore. But clearly Dan "sucked more" than Wayne.

Marty S had the best team and lost again. Dan had an incomplete team and scrimped by. Wayne had the talent in the stable but he forgot to feed them. Wayne lost a half mil, Dan lost a mil a year, Marty who chose to ignore his boss, made 3-4 M a year. Marty Ball failed in the front office and before he got on the field to lose.

Dan in a landslide. Darts180 has pretty much said everything that needs to be said regarding this debate. They both deserved to be gone, and I'm glad they are both gone. And, to me, Dan's as much not D1 head coaching material as Wayne is. But, this poll just shows how wickedly Dan could spin doctor his crappiness. He was proverbially peeing on our heads the majority of the time, but, apparently, has convinced most of you that it was just raining. I do thank Dan for at least raising the perception of our program, even if the reality wasn't much greater than he found it, so that someone like Chizik would even take our call.

I appreciate some of the feedback. I think that this is a thread that a lot of people don't want to touch, due to the nerve that it may hit. And many of the people don't want to examine what it could possibly mean.

Many thanks to those who, not only voted but were willing to offer an answer. The numbers do speak loudly.
