I just rewatched the game, and Sam played pretty well. He had good accuracy and velocity on his throws, including throws downfield. There were several passes against NDSU that had to be right on the money and right on time, and they were. His pass to Lazard was beautiful, hitting him right in stride. There were a couple of drops that had potential had they been caught. I specifically saw one zone read where he made the wrong read (DE immediately crashed inside, and he still handed it off to the RB). On the 3rd & long plays where he threw it to a WR only 5 yards downfield, it was clear from the amount of time he held the ball that his deep options weren't open and the check-down was the best option. He scrambled at the right times, and generally got first downs out of them. I did change my opinion of the first INT - that was a bad read on his part. The receiver was covered well enough by the zone that he shouldn't have gone there. But the second INT is still on Lazard, who should have moved his feet to get to the ball and used two hands to try for the catch.
Our left tackle got abused repeatedly, and our right tackle got abused on occasion. The center and guards seemed to do ok (not great, but not terrible) most of the game. Their LB did a great job getting to their gaps and making plays.
Our WR need to block better. There was one screen play specifically where Lazard put an okay block on the DB and it looked like he was out of the play, but he made a great hustle play to get back in position and tackle Wemberly for no gain. If Lazard had held that block a half second longer, Wemberly had lots of room to run.
In the first half, our defense (especially the line) wasn't responding to the overloaded lines. NDSU was lining up either unbalanced, or with two TE on the same side. There was never a shift to handle the extra gap. Add that to 1-2 pulling linemen and a blocking fullback, and we were playing 5 on 7. Later in the 2nd quarter we started shifting the DL to account for the extra blocker, but the linemen and FB were still outflanking us. Once we started to adjust, they began running to the weak side. We had a few stretches where we'd hold them to only 4-6 yards on 1st and 2nd down, but we couldn't keep the consistency to get the defense off the field.
We had some blown coverages that NDSU capitalized on. The long play that set up their second touchdown, our safety got lost following a TE across the field (putting him in double coverage). There was another play in the third quarter when it was still close, 3rd and mid-to-long, where one of our linebackers decided to run with a slot receiver 20 yards downfield leaving no one to cover the underneath routes on his side. Sure enough a TE came dragging across the field - Miller picked him up through the middle of the field, then let him go apparently thinking someone else would be there to pick him up. But that linebacker who went running down field ended up double covering the slot with our safety. The pass went to the wide open TE, who had acres to run around in and set up I think their second FG of the game.
I also thought in run defense our LB were getting too close to the DL. There were several times we had LB getting caught up in the wash as they were trying to flow to the RB, and while they were running into our DL backsides the pulling guards and FB were heading towards our safeties.
Watching the game a second time on DVR, using rewind and slo-mo, I don't think our problems are quite as big as I originally thought. I also think NDSU is a better team than any of us gave them credit for. I feel like our defense performed far closer to their ceiling that our offense did. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of improvement on offense from this week to next. But our defense is going to struggle against KSU (I don't think they run as much power stuff as NDSU) and will probably get smoked against Iowa/Weisman.
