Who coulda been?

Ken Griffey Jr????????????????

The three biggest athlete stars of all time go like this:
1. Michael Jordan
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Ken Griffey Jr

Because he could have been so much better. He would have been a sure fire Hall of Famer and one of the greatest PG's to ever play the game had he not been so selfish and immature.

I think that's an easy (lazy?) knock to make on Iverson, but I kind of wonder if 10 years from now history won't be a lot kinder to him. He spent most of his prime on some Sixers teams that were pretty bad outside of Iverson and carried them to success. He was selfish, but I think he almost had to be. And mostly, I think he caught a bad rap because of what people decided he represented.

Don't know if I agree with those rankings, but it strikes me that all three should have actually had MORE success than they did, which is pretty mind-blowing.

Ken Griffey Jr. It would've been awesome to get a few more years of that sweet, sweet swing. Easily the sweetest swing of the past 25 years.

I was just discussing this yesterday. If his swing was a girl, I would f*** the s*** out of it

I don't really agree McGrady could have been much more. Had a great 8 year run and was 30 when he greatly declined. He's battled injuries, but he never led his team out of the first round.

Didn't McGrady suffer from migraines for a good chunk of his prime? I may be thinking of someone else.

I kind of agree with this. He was more or less a one man team on offense in his prime with the Sixers (they were a solid defensive team, though). When Aaron McKie is your second scoring option and Eric Snow is your third, that's a team that'll struggle to score points.

Mark (The Bird) Fidrych
Ken Griffey Jr.
Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell

Being in Cooperstown isn't enough for you?

But seriously, the man that starts and ends this list for the NFL is Charles Rogers, one of Detroit's knuckleheaded first round receivers.....Guy had all the talent in the world outta Michigan State but he got injured early on, never bounced back, as well as having the intelligence of a 2X4......

When I see guys like Shawn Kemp, Rasheed Wallace, Allen Iverson, and Griffey Junior in this thread....I don't understand, those people were dominant for a given amount of time....AI never won a championship because he never had a good enough surrounding cast and was a tad selfish, Shawn Kemp was probably one of the top 10 players of the 90's, Rasheed Wallace was an all star for the Jail-Blazers and proved to be the missing piece to the Pistons championship team that downed the Hall of Fame laden roster of the Lakers of Shaq, the Mailman, Gary Payton, and Kobe. Griffey was arguably one of the most productive players of the 90's, got a bad deal when his body just seem to breakdown on him as he was getting to Cincinnati, also was helped out in Seattle by being protected in the lineup by A-Rod, Edgar Martinez, and a few solid years of Jay Buhner at the plate....Those people did not disappoint, were not busts...Hard to say what could've been when They WERE.....

I think iverson shouldnt be on the list, i dont like him but he seemed to leave it all on the floor and give it all he had during games (im sure there are examples of times he didnt). I mean come on, the guy shot like 50 times a game, thats trying lol.

Mark Prior was the first one to pop into my head.

On that note (sorry to make this a Cub thread) I would also like to add:

Kerry Wood - HOF stuff before injuries. I was so ecstatic that we had Wood and Prior back to back. I thought for sure that would be an epic run. ****!

Also add Corey Patterson. He was having a stellar start to his career before tearing up his knee running to first freaking base. Never the same and just floundered after. I'm not sure he would have been great, but I think he could have been very good.

Freddy Adu: had he signed with a European club and went through the youth team, he would have been better equipped. Instead, he chose to play for the MLS as a 16 year old: boy playing against men in (no offence intended - but that was the reality) a league equals to Championship or League One. 7 years later we know the story.

Mike Tyson: I know he's been good, but what a career it could have been: he could be undefeated and heavyweight might not be as sad as it is right now.
