i see alot of the incoming freshmen redshirting, especially on offense. we need help on defense, so we could see some newbies getting playing time there. who do you think will make the biggest impact?

i think the JUCO guys will all play. ricky howard should be #2 at TE. jon caspers could be a great backup o-lineman. chris young adds alot of depth at WR. anthony young could start at CB if we put benton at nickleback. durrell givens could possibly start at FS. for the incoming freshmen, i think jeremiah george could be the best. there's alot of hype about shontrelle, but will he see any playing time or will he redshirt? if he redshirts, then he could start for 4 years if he ends up being as good as we all hope he will be. is rony nelson gonna play this year? have heard alot of negative things about his attitude and heard that he doesn't want to be in ames?

thoughts?

If Ronnie Nelson can be an impact player we are a surprise team this year. I doubt this happens... but just because Floyed Mattison is so fast and athletic I would love so see him starting in the secondary this year with Sims, Johnson, and Young(who is hopefully also a great juco pickup).

oh yeah, i forgot mattison. i have heard that mattison's game and givens' game are very similar. if this is the case, then givens may have the edge having 2 years of JUCO ball under his belt. either way, we will have better depth in alot of places this year. d-line and LB are my biggest worries at this point. i think at LB we will have some talent, but not much experience

I doubt SHontrelle redshirts and I am guessing as he picks up the offense he will see more and more time. I will stick with my original prediction that he will not really be the second running back as much as he is ARobs backup if that makes sense.

Rony Nelson could be the biggest impact player on this team this year. I said could be. His JUCO stats were simply gaudy. There is nothing more to go off of.

I think Jarvis West could be a playmaker this year if he is the return man. Albert Gary could be similar. I thought there were a lot of other talented guys in the class but I think those guys (George, Bennett, Mattison etc.) will take longer to be seen. All three of those mentioned, by the end of their career, could be phenomenal players. Bennett was my pick out of the class to be the best when he leaves ISU. I just think he could be great in either a safety or LB role. He has the size and speed to be either. My guess is that they will decide where to put him and then start him on the program in that position group.

I would actually like to see everyone start off as being redshirted. Then as the season/practices go along, you pull them off as they are ready or need them. If they aren't ready to contribute or aren't needed, then I see no reason not to redshirt them. I am sure that theory is nothing new to the staff.

Also, wasn't the plan on Caspers to redshirt? That could have changed since I heard that.

I might be mistaken, but I thought Mattison was a linebacker prospect. I know he was pretty smal for the postition, but I thought that's how he was listed.

I don't think Mattison will be a safety. I think he may be that flex postion. The DB/LB hybrid. The kid is a freak athlete. Maybe as much as anyone who has played here.

I've heard a lot of positives about McDonough and I love his size at DT too.. especially for how young he is. I have a pretty good feeling about him, Parker, and Nelson.

I don't know if he's technically a newcomer since he redshirted last year, but I think that Donnie Jennert could be very special. He's got a ton of potential.

You know, Parker is a guy kind of flying under the radar. We don't talk about him but he has now had a couple years under much better coaching. I know he was injured and wasn't able to physically practice but there is a cerebral compenent to that too. Maybe he is better than we think this year. I'm not saying he will be extraordinary, but if Rony is solid and you can put a solid DT next to him, maybe he could be pretty good. Last year he was likely the one keyed on on our line. Not a lot of other threats.

He could be a SS and play in the box.

Very likely but I think Bennett goes there. Either one could go either way. I think I like Mattisons speed in coverage better though and that's why I would put him there. This is all theory off measureables. I don't really know anything.

yeah mcdonough could really help us this year. with the schedule we have, we HAVE TO get more QB pressure. our DBs did a good job in coverage last year, but when we give the opponent a full 30 seconds in the pocket, the WRs will always end up getting seperation. LJ will be all conference this year!!! from what i hear, he has been putting in alot of work on his coverage skills

parker has never got many sacks, but i remember seeing him in the pocket after the QB quite a few times. hope he can rack up more sacks this year. and i definately agree that nelson could be the biggest suprise, but he could also be the biggest bust

I have high hopes for Albert Gary. IMO he and Young (along with a healthy Reynolds) are going to transform our WR corps. For the other JUCOS:

Ricky Howard - He'll be a 3rd TE and find a place as a blocker (H-Back)
Anthony Young - Will battle Reeves all year for the 3rd CB spot (comes in when Benton moves to LB in the nickel)
Durrell Givens - In a battle with O'Connell and Brooks for the starting FS spot. I'm betting he spends 2010 behind O'Connell.
Rony Nelson - Just a huge question mark. IF he shows, I could see him contributing.
Jon Caspers - Redshirts unless there are major injury issues on the OL.

For the FR, I think that Shontrelle Johnson will play mostly special teams and get a few carries here and there. Gary will play if not start eventually. I also believe that George and Bennett will play special teams similar to what Knott and Klein did last year.

See, I think Earl Brooks could be the starting safety. Just a hunch. I like how our secondary is put together. The key will be pressure.

BTW, I personally do not believe that Donnie Jennert will ever see a meaningful snap at ISU.

Interesting. Is that just a feeling, or are you basing it on info that you have?
