Where does Bates go now?

For just one year? I can't even see the question arising. He'll transfer to a non Big XII school, have a year to redhsirt and learn the offense, and two (hopefully) to start.

For whoever keeps tossing Michigan ouy there, they have not one, but two talented commits right now that he'd spend his redshirt season watching. I don't think that's gonna happen, either.

He'll go where he wants to. If he was smart, he'd apologize to his teammates, and beg Coach Chizik to let him stay in Ames. I don'y think that'll happen, either.

Yeah, I will repeat, he was beaten out for a starting spot on a team that is 2-3, and has lost 3 in a row.

We hear that he was everybody's choice except the coaches, and they were against him. Even though he played several series, but was outperformed by Arnaud.

It seems easy to understand that 33 is much closer to Bates than Arnaud, every time he has talked about this subject, he has campaigned for Bates. I understand, we see it all over the board, people have friends, and the talk them up.

I still want to know why it is tough to talk to Chizik. I mean, that was the excuse that 33, himself, made for Bates leaving the way that he did.

UNO or UNI (it worked for Benny Sapp).

Anyone remember a guy from NU ...running back David Horne who transferred to UNI when Billy Callahan came to Lincoln...

I thought all along that Bates would transfer to UNI after this season...No lost year and you dont have to sit one year either!!!

yes david horne was from omaha central. he and stevie hicks were teammates and good friends. stevie transferred to creighton prep as a sophomore so that they wouldnt have to compete with each other for playing times and stats, as they both understood they had D1 potential. horne finished out at central and accepted at NU. he was a decent back that got mixed up in that mess over there. i think he finished pretty strong as a panther.

I think if he's accepting he doesn't have BCS quarterback talent, he would rather suit up for the big red and play a different position. If he can't have his first love, then might as well live out his parents dream and step out on the field of Notre Dame....er Nebraska, sorry, had a Rudy moment there

That was the year UNI went to the D1AA title game and lost to Appalachain St. He did play pretty well for UNI. As for Bates. I finished my first season in my NCAA 09 dynasty last night and Bates is going to be the first one I cut going into my next season.

just move him to WR, make him a little faster and slightly better hands, and change his name to Money.

What he ought to do is wait a month and a half or so and see if Turner Gill gets the Syracuse job. If he does (and in my opinion, he deserves it) Phillip can transfer there and play for a Husker legend in the Big East (primarily a running league). He would have to sit out year one of the Gill era, but would have a chance to start in years two and three. There really isn't a big time power in the Big East right now, and Bates could be part of a Syracuse resurgence.

Or he could transfer to Syracuse and be part of the worst team in Division 1 football and then quit on his teammates there as well. The kid has no credibility and any coach who would want him probably has some serious issues with lack of discipline.

On that note he should probably transfer to Iowa. It just makes sense. Tons of guys on that team with no class and a total lack of character. Also plenty of mediocre players on that team that think they are superstars. A coach with a complete lack of discipline describes Ferentz to a T. Sounds like the perfect fit to me.

Please feel free not to rag on him. The kid had some bad advice, it's over and done with--and I'm sure there are other threads for that.

Frankly, I don't really care where he goes. I just kinda hope he starts somewhere for a BCS team--and we beat the pants off 'em in a bowl game.

After reading the NCAA's transfer guide (you read it for yourself at ncaa.org) we'll find out a lot more when schools start asking for permission to talk to Bates. It's clearly stated in the transfer guide that schools must get written permission to talk to transferring athlete from the school he is leaving.

Now as far as Bates transferring to Nebraska? I just don't see it happening. Looking at their roster, they are already redshirting two quarterbacks and have another one verbally committed for this class. So basically he would have to beat out three other quarterbacks with only one year of eligibility left. I agree with what I've read on some of the Husker boards, I see him going to a MAC/C-USA school, someplace like Ohio (Solich) or Buffalo (Turner Gill)

How is that ragging on him? He's shown nothing but promise at this point in game situations. Nothing I would consider overly credible at this point.

PB walked away 5 games into the season. Bad advice or not, any coach worth his salt should have serious concerns about that decision. If that's not a red flag, I don't know what is. Maybe lack of discipline wasn't the best wording for what he was getting at. Maybe lack of commitment, lack of concern for teammates, lack of focus. Those all seem to fit given what any of us on the outside know.

How is that ragging on him?

Because we don't know what happened, aside from the fact that perhaps he told his dad he was unhappy, and his dad took it from there. Sure, it was immature, but there's no reason to keep running on and on and on about it--especially with a game tomorrow, and current Cyclones to think about.

Oddly enough, I have a suspicion that lots of coaches expect a nineteen or twenty year old to be immature. Someone will be happy to have his talent--with a yera to mature.

How many BCS scholarship offers did he have out of high-school as a quarterback?

As far as I recall he only had two offers - Nebraska & ISU. At least that's what scout shows. And I'm pretty sure Nebraska was not looking at him as a QB. Incidentally, check out their article of July 19, 2006 (link on left hand side of page).

Exactly... he came to Ames with the express intent to play qb for ISU. No other school offered him a scholarship to play qb. In my opinion, he has very few options in regards to D-I programs if he doesn't want to switch positions.

I won't be surprised at all to see him on the defensive side of the ball at Nebraska. I honestly think he has decided if he can't play QB, he would rather sit out and learn a different position for his family's beloved huskers than another team. He came to ISU to prove he could be a QB at this level. If we had told him we wouldn't play him there to start, he never would have signed with us, just like the other schools that told him he couldn't play QB for them.
