Where do we go at QB from here?

What would you do at QB?

Kempt was given a limited playbook. When every play called is only a main target and one check down, it's a lot easier to know where to go as opposed to when you have one to two main target and every eligible receiver as a check down.

not so sure kempt had a limited play book, he has more time with this staff then park, kept came in the spring ,park in the fall. but manning did call a better game OR did kempt just make better decisions then park did against Texas...

" I think the story on Kyle is really unique. He's not the starter and was not the starter. He's a guy that just diligently worked and worked and worked behind the scenes and always practiced like the starter so when this opportunity came it was really easy to make the choice to go to Kyle "

- Coach Campbell on Rome today

this portion from around the 8 min mark
Then, the part you didn't mention: CMC said, "He has put himself into the position to be the starter. " Sounds like he is the starter to me:cool::cool::cool:

It is and always is about taking advantage of what the defense is giving you and exploiting their weaknesses. Our offense did this on Saturday. We had a significant advantage with our wide receivers. Manning and Kempt got them the ball in situations were they could exploit the OU d-backs. Kempt didn't have to be the play maker, he just needed to get the ball to our play makers.

How odd is it that we actually appeared to have more talent at the skill positions than OU on Saturday. When was that ever said, never.

What was really cool about Saturday was that we didn't win because of trick plays, fake punts, fake field goals, or an onside kick, we won because we outplayed OU.

Did you even watch the game?
Lol, Park didn't go rouge and instead of handing it off to DM, called 50 passes, most of them being vertical.

We do RPOs dependent on Park to make a read of the defensive alignment.

I don't know how many of the 55 pass plays vs 10 run plays had the option to run or pass with Park incorrectly choosing pass, but a whopping 85% passing plays when we were down by 1 score, plus the heated sideline arguments with Campbell...safe to say Park wasn't following the system as its designed. And even if it was 55 designed passes (no chance it was), when Texas is sitting in cover 2, you should be checking down or taking off out of the pocket when they are giving you that much space underneath. 3 INTs don't just happen by sheer concidences of the universe, theres always a reason. Park was that reason vs Texas.

The issue I see with Kempt and all the screens and swings he was hitting is what happens when every defense cheats out to the edges? This is where I wish we went Joeldozer to take a Louisville Slugger to both headlights and slash a hole in all 4 tires, and maybe make Kansas think twice before they cheat.

What other area of the field can Kempt punish the D if they stop 1 of the things he is capable of doing? I don't see that 2nd dimension to his game. Although I guess having high pointing WRs like Lazard & Hakeem helps.

That's evidence of a bad game plan right there. Hey, let's just RPO with all vertical routes and see if our QB is Superman is a horrible game plan. There's a reason why we didn't do that with Kempt. If Park got that from the same plan from the staff we beat UT.

So let me get this right, you consider running for a first down and throwing 30 yards downfield, for the winning score to be a screen or swing pass? You're the one who is 1 dimensionable.

Marchies TD was a swing, Ryens was a screen. Kempt hit a couple lob jumpballs...the Lazard TD on a 3rd and long in FG range, Lazard when we were pinned deep, Hakeem at the end of the 2nd quarter. But his 18 completions were mostly short routes to Montgomery and Ryen. How many darts did he throw 15 yards downfield? The 1 to Ryen he threaded downfield was pretty nice but otherwise his deep balls were situational lobs. You are pretty rude for someone who doesnt understand those situations. It was a well executed plan by Kempt and Manning, Im just concerned about his encore.

Unless Kansas has 6'4' d-backs, I wouldn't be concerned about an encore. Our WRs create matchup issues with their size in the passing game and their blocking ability on the screens. If Kansas tries to take that away the screens or they try to double the WR on the vertical routes, it will just open up things for Montgomery. If Kempt can continue to make the throws he made Saturday, we can be successful. We don't really need him to be throwing darts. We need him to take what the defense give us.

So if Park is back for Kansas. We should bench the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, Kyle Kempt. And start Jacob Park?

Disagree. Kempt earned the right to start against Kansas. No doubt.

I'm not sure it's even an issue, but clearly Kempt. I feel like he got so much better from 11:00 am on Saturday to 1:00 pm, that another week of reps would be great for him.

All excellent points that I agree with. When you have Joeldozer to move the sticks in short yardage and guys like Hakeem & Lazard who can high point jumpballs and bail you out of tight situations, the QB becomes less relevant so long as they can play within the system.

And a stampeding bull like Montgomery in the backfield is that 3rd dimension that keeps the box stacked. Now here is where I say if Lanning was QB and we're running Joeldozers on 2nd & 5s...a 6 man front having to stop a convoy of beef in Seonbuckner, Montgomery, and a pull guard...automatic TDs on demand like vs Texas Tech.

Still, its easy to rip on Park (I do all the time), but lets not discount some of the things he has done and lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater on RPOs in the name of simplicity. I believe the 4th & 1 slant route TD by Marchie vs UNI on a 9 man UNI box, 20 or so yd seam route TD by Butler vs UNI where he was lined up like a slot TE and the safety was shading Lazard so Butler was 1 on 1 vs an LB, the 4th & 1 30 or so yd TD by Butler vs Iowa, the 80 yd Butler TD vs Iowa on 1st & 10...I think those were all RPOs, and it took some stones and a strong arm for Park to make those reads given the situations. If they are loading the box and the safeties are cheating, make em pay, doesn't matter the down & distance. Unfortunately I think all of those reads went off the rails vs Texas.

It comes back to, do you want the gunslinger or game manager? Pros and cons to both sides I suppose. But I'm actually on the 3rd side of this debate...I've always been Team Lanning at QB. Too many years of watching McFarland, Herman, Messingham, Mangino work the downfield darts in Ames while watching Snyder neutralize the D with a running QB in a place like Manhattan. But at least here's to Devon & Re-al someday when we don't have Lazard to bail us out.

Even though we are playing Kansas, there is a ton of prep work that goes into the start of the week for teams. I feel that if Park wasnt actively practicing and in the QB room able to participate, he doesnt play. I think the staff goes with Kempt. On the flip side, if park is partaking in normal team activities as if nothing happened, he still doesnt play and would probably be put in if Kempt's encore is a flop.

Side note, Lanning starts at TE so he can catch a TD pass so the media can have a hay-day. Also, calling: Lanning goes in the 6th round to the New England Patriots and is the next Mathew Slater and becomes a special teams captain.
