Where do we go at QB from here?

What would you do at QB?

I haven't really paid attention to much in this thread so maybe I've missed what you've been saying the whole time but I'm not sure how you're saying we shouldn't take players like Moore or Mitchell when Campbell obviously wants them here.

No, I'm extremely excited about Devon and Re-al. I hope we use the Joeldozer draws with them, the swings & screens to speedsters like Tarique and Schleker, the deep RPOs to guys who can high point like Kolar and Shaw. I'm pumped for that. I just thinking Lanning could lead us to an 8-4 record right now if we forced a D to cover his draws, Butler & Lazard's jumpballs, and Ryen & Marchie's swings/swings. And I haven't even mentioned the stampeding bull in the backfield otherwise known as David Montgomery. The Park hype...I just never understood it. When he breaks a 150 passer efficiency rating, we'll see. But we have had a long long long look at 1 dimensional pocket passers in Ames, and it hasn't been pretty.

The scout will be out on Kyle and while KU can't do anything other teams can adjust since he can't make some throws that Park can. We will then have to adjust accordingly but it eliminates some options.

Zeb may be a pretty viable option if he has to play.

If Lanning would lead to more wins and success why isn't Campbell doing that?

We just did. And beat Oklahoma in Norman.

Lanning had 3 pass attempts and 35 yards rushing. I love me some Lanning but Park gives us the best chance to win which is why he is the starter. You act like we never have had success with a pocket passer and always had success with QB's that can run. Honestly who was the last pocket passer we had before Park. Sage maybe? Rohach briefly?

And Lanning moved the sticks how many times? Do you know how hard that is to do on a 3rd & 2 vs a stacked box? You wouldn't get that on a handoff where the QB is out of the play and not lead blocking for the RB. Lanning can hit all the short routes Kempt hit, while adding in the running threat. Now that the OU game is on film, defenses will be loading the edges to stop the swings and screens. Lanning could punish D's for this in a way that Park and Kempt can't.

We haven't had prototypical NFL pocket passers. That's the problem, we can't recruit them to ISU. But we have tried to make guys like Richardson and Rohach run the Mangino system. Even Park, he's a rarity for ISU if he hadn't...well however he found his way out of Georgia.

Richardson was a runner, Rohach wasn't good and Park is good. I'm not even sure what you're talking about at this point

Yes we did a few zone blocked zone reads with Richardson. I'm fine with incorporating those plays too, but we also tried to have his weak arm push it downfield. Everybody keeps telling me that Park is good...then why is his passer efficiency the same as Lanning's who supposedly isn't good?

Lanning put up really solid numbers actually. I don't know how their numbers compare. He got benched for Park because Park gives us the best chance to win which is really saying something because Joel was solid.

Well we just have a different view of how games are won in Ames, and I don't think we are changing each others minds tonight. It's been a pleasure hashing it over. Go 'Clones!

I love what Joel Lanning brings to the table, and think the defense is coming along with dropping 8. D-line can't get a pass rush, but they've proven to be formidable vs the run. With the defense coming along, Lanning is a viable option for ISU to play some K-state ball. However I see him remaining situational.

Kempt seems to have more touch than Park. Doubt he can make all the throws Park does. His silky smooth motion, especially on misdirection stuff looked good Saturday. Fake hand off to the left, then delivering ball 100% right on target to the right flat type of stuff was impressive. Really fluid movement. Not firing bullets.

However, I've seen this song and dance before at ISU. Rohach vs WVU, Richardson vs KU, Barnett vs Tech, Jantz vs Iowa, Arnaud vs KSU(2007). They all looked like the golden ticket to the next level of the Big 12. All were fairly flawed inconsistent QBs, with decent potential, and their beat games were outliers.

I'm in the Park camp if/when he returns. But in the meantime I feel pretty decent about this team. Bound to be some Kempt struggles vs KU, but ISU is just solid enough all around to overscome some QB inconsistencies vs mediocre to bad teams.

Seems to me that Kempt didn't make any mistakes. That is huge. Park has had a couple of head scratchers including that INT at the end of the Iowa game. It would be very hard not to give Kempt another start IMO.

I'm pretty sure you can have as many walk-ons as you want. Only so many are allowed to dress for games.

Just because you can have as many walk-ons as you want, you can only work with a limited number of walk-on players. If the coaches did not see true talent and potential, they would not have had him as a walk-on, and instead would have gone with a true freshman that may have developed for the first year.

At this point, I'd go with Kempt, Noland, and Lanning and let Park work out his issues. He needs to get right and, if the rumors are true, that takes more than a week. You need a guy you can count on to be your QB. If Kempt's performance was an outlier and he doesn't have the skillet necessary, then Zeb should be the next guy in.

Also, if a player is out with injury and in the meantime the staff discovers a clearly better player, the old starter doesn't get his starting spot back Imo.

Yep, I mean, look at the best baseball player there ever was.... if Bump Bailey hadn't died after running into the wall, I don't think anybody ever would have heard the name Roy Hobbs. Sometimes the guy on the bench is actually better.

Then there's that Tom Brady guy. The injury to Bledsoe worked out well for the Patriots.
