Where do we go at QB from here?

What would you do at QB?

Kyle Kempt played a great game yesterday. However, that great game came mostly from great play-calling that put OU on their toes and gave Kempt the opportunity to get the ball to playmakers as the first option. Kyle Kempt was asked to not try to win the game by himself, which he did perfectly. That does not make him a better quarterback than Jacob Park, whatsoever. Had the Texas game not been last week, this wouldn't even be a question. Jacob Park has played one bad game in about a season of him starting games, and that one game was as much attributed to the play calling as Park. Kyle Kempt will always be a Cyclone legend for what happened yesterday. Jacob Park can be a Cyclone legend for being one of the best quarterbacks in Iowa State history.

Park was throwing at a 66% clip before the Texas game. He played bad but I attribute a lot of that to bad coaching/scheme. Put Kempt in for Park with that game plan and we lose by 30.

Kempt played great for what was asked of him, which was very little. You’re trying to tell me that Park or Noland couldn’t throw those screen balls to Ryan or Murdock?? There’s a reason why Lazard didn’t have a catch until after halftime.

The gameplan yesterday was beautiful on offense, but that isn’t going to work for very long. I’d like to see how many of his Yards were passes in front of the line of scrimmage. I’d imagine a good chunk were Lazard’s TD and Butler before the half.

If and when Park is healthy and stable, he has to be the guy. Keep the same game plan, but Park allows you to open up the offense

You would be correct on the short passes sir. Between Kempt and Lanning we had 20 completions...7 to Montgomery, 4 to Ryen (I believe 3 short and 1 down field IIRC), 2 to Deshaunte, the swing pass TD to Marchie, and I forget what Marchie's 2nd catch was on. So a majority were short passes with the occasional strategically timed deepball (Butler at the end of the 2nd half, Lazard for the jumpball TD on a 3rd & long in FG range, Lazard when we were pinned deep).

It's on film now and teams will be defending the edge. This is why I'm Team Lanning...QB draws should be ripe for the pickins vs KU.

But was Park asked to do that or did he take it upon himself to go out and try to win the game all by himself?
Park didn't refuse to hand it to DM. And the route tree sucked against UT. Park had a poor game, but he was impacted by the staff's poor game plan far more than his play impacted the staff. They went into the game counting on riding Park's arm throwing downfield.

In this Park vs Kempt discussion, the staff's discipline in handling a talent like Park isn't getting enough attention. It's on the staff to come up with a game plan that gives DM the ball and to get Park to use his talents as a complementary counterpart. Park ("healthy") in yesterday's game plan is what we need. Park sitting at home watching Kempt should provide some leverage to the staff.

I think it would be interesting to see the differing age groups of CF and how they vote. I’m guessing the younger crowd 20-35 would be for Park and 35 up would favor Kempt

If Park is right mentally, you go with him. He had one bad game, it happens. It's nice to know we have Kempt ready to go though if he's needed.

A larger sample beats recency bias every time.

Wins beat everything. :)

If I had my way, Kempt would start on Saturday and Park would play some. It just seems to me that if the coaches were telling the truth, that it is hard to believe that Park will be ready to play on Saturday. But I obviously don't know anything.

We haven't been losing to because of Park though.

If I had my way Park would be fully 'recovered ' and we would use him similar to how we used Kempt. Park can play like Kempt with the added bonus of more arm strength, and has, when the staff demands that.
