When does the first round drought end?

I think it's kind of like the NCAA tourney. Keep getting there, and the chances of making a run are better.

If ISU gets consistent at having NFL draftees go through their program, which also has never happened, one year a team will take their shot.

If Kyler Murray were at a place that doesn't have OU's history, I'm not sure he's picked like last night. That pick will be interesting to watch develop over the next two-three years.

TEs in the game the NFL wants to play are a huge advantage. Especially TEs like Hockenson. That's a guy who can block and catch at a very high level. TEs who are atheltic enough to beat a LB in pass coverage and big enough to bowl over a small safety or corner are creating huge mismatches right now. I agree those other pieces are important, but if you have some answers there but don't have an answer at TE they are crazy valuable. And look who drafted TJ, the Patriots former DC who knows how valuable a great TE can be.

I agree - there are a lot of skilled and good WRs and RBs you can plug into any system and go. It’s really hard to find good TEs like you talk about above and they can completely change an offense.

How about we start worrying more about getting multiple players drafted AT ALL before we start worrying about players being drafted in the first round? I mean, when ISU has had a grand total of 5 players drafted in the last DECADE, why are we really ******** about how we're getting snubbed of first round picks?

Who said we wanted to stop at 1?

Success begets success, which is why TJ Hockensen was selected 8th last night as a TE, and why the next big TE recruit will choose Iowa over Iowa state, and therefore be drafted higher than anyone Iowa State has. And the cycle repeats itself.

The ability to put people into the draft, especially at a high level, is a huge recruiting advantage.

Frankly, I think it will take more than that. Here are the 40 times of the LBs taken yesterday:
White: 4.42
Allen: 4.63
Bush: 4.43
Burns: 4.53

Only one of those guys didn't go sub 4.6 and I don't project Rose to end up 6'5" and 261 lbs. Even Burns might have dropped out of the first round with his +4.5 forty if not for being 6'5" and 249.

It is incredibly tough to get drafted on day 1.

Just one point. Everyone knows that Will McDonald has the title of “Best Athlete The Staff Has Signed””. But who held that title before he arrived?

Yep, Enyi. If he stays healthy, has a big season and proves he can get tho the quarterback, the NGL will be drooling. Guys who can balance those edge rushers to are extremely rare.
 
If we pay attention to the draft, we see patterns in who is picked and who isn't. Quarterbacks, explosive pass rushers and offensive linemen are usually the most likely picks. Throw in a few big-play receivers, the "hot" running back, a couple lock-down secondary players and athletic linebackers and that's your first round. Here are some of my thoughts on current cyclones and their chances of making it in the first round.

PURDY

If Purdy goes out his Junior year, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Field will likely be the first two picks with probably a few other QB in contention to be first rounders . He'll have to have two great years to be in that mix. My guess is that he'll return for his senior year, though. He does have obvious limitations that hold him back from being in the first round. He's not built like Roethlisberger, nor runs like Vick. He's more like Baker Mayfield in which he'll need to impress with his arm, playmaking ability and intangibles. Question is, can he win like Baker? My opinion is he's a day two.

ENYI

Enyi is interesting. He has the highest upside and a first round frame. He projects to be a 3-4 Defensive End, similar to DeForest Buckner when he was drafted. Can he make improvements to his game to get after the qb and stop the run? Can he stay healthy? I see him in the third or fourth round

EISWORTH

Short on Eisworth. We all know what he can do. I think he will have a special season this year and he will decide to leave early. I think he will even get attention as a first rounder from lots of mocks. But, I think he slips to day two... maybe even three.

ROSE

I have seen his name ALOT on this thread. I love him and everyone has reason to love him. He has great instincts, NFL frame, tackle ability and seems to be a good leader. He's a football player! But, is he a physical freak? The only true linebackers chosen in the first round this year run 4.4s. Rose doesn't. Although I think Rose has legit possibilites of becoming an All American in college, I think the NFL covets physical freaks and he'll slip a bit.

MCDONALD

Here he is. My pick for the next first rounder. Go back and watch this clip (23 seconds in) . Campbell LOVES him and so do I. He is so physically gifted. He is raw, but we have heard that his progression has been going very well. He projects as a 3-4 OLB pass rusher in the NFL. The NFL begs for elite pass rushers and I think he has that ability. He has the best chance.

OTHER GUYS

There are a few guys who a shot, but its not likely:
Milton, Anthony Johnson, Kolar, Knipfel, Hall and Brock

Guys who have no shot at first round:
Bailey, Lima, Datrone Young, Good-Jones, Sean Shaw

Alright... Tell me where I'm wrong

Enyi has 1.5 sacks in 2 seasons. What makes you think he can get to the QB?

Only the freshman lineman have a shot here, and thats a massive longshot given our ability to develop OT. We don't have a candidate on the roster to be a first round pick if you want to look at things objectively. You can have a very good college team without having one.

Ray Lima or Jaquan Bailey are the most likely, but they'll probably be late round picks. I also think one of our 3 TE's could if they have a breakout year.

I could see that. Lima's a space eater on the inside, Dexter Lawrence type. Kolar seems to be the TE with the biggest upside but isn't he a soph?

They don't have that much more, which is why they are where they are. The NFL overvalues Kirk Ferentz's system and drafts guys more based on that reputation than how good they actually are.

Jordan Bernstine got drafted when Leonard Johnson didn't. I don't think anyone who ever watched those two play would come to the conclusion that Bernstine was better at football, but he was a Ferentz guy.

Iowa's lack of wins compared to the amount of NFL talent they produce says more about the NFL than anything.
