what's wrong with this team?

We have the same players and their respective strengths and weaknesses that we've had the past few years where we did the exact same things. I think the biggest issue is fans haven't taken that into consideration when setting expectations.

This is it. The lack of depth is exposing the problems more than they have been exposed in the past two years. And even last year, UAB exposed ISU at an inopportune time. ISU isn't great at defending. ISU isn't great at rebounding. ISU isn't great at those hustle things (like chasing lose balls). These are the things Prohm has to shore up. Hopefully, ISU can start making some strides in those areas during the rest of this season. It's a tall order.

It's hilarious how once we got a little bit of a taste of success, we became spoiled. Oh and all the hot takes here are quite entertaining.

Being upset over a loss to Texas Tech means the fan base is spoiled? I'd love to know exactly how you came to that conclusion.

This team really Misses Naz Long and the coaching of Fred Hoiberg..................I will say it again This Team Peaked Last Year in Kansas City.....

Really missing a lot of easy transition baskets that we had last year...This Coach and Team need to look in the mirror...And then look at Tapes of last years team...................

I think this is spot on. Last year we could dig ourself in a 20 point hole. This year we can routinely blow 10 point first half leads. Fred's coaching definitely had some holes in it, but he focused on the teams strengths. He got that if you didn't make baskets the rest was a mute point. We are no longer a second half team. I can't see that we are making any significant coaching adjustments at half time. That is on the coach and no one else. I fully support these guys even when they loose. Now some of our coaching is very questionable...

Ashton plays better defense. Not that Hallice is bad. Hallice looks like he could be more capable on offense, but there's apparently something that Prohm knows or sees that we don't.

Shouldn't be out there.

Sure we do get a little spoiled but that's to be expected with the expectations that were set going into this year. People who are saying we all had our expectations too high are just trying to sound good because let's face it, at one point this year everyone was expecting a lot. Its what we were told to expect from basically everyone. Now me as alot of you are starting to lower our expectations. After the baylor loss at home i started to lower my expectations

I really believe Dustin Hogue was one of the main reasons Iowa State was successful the past couple years. I miss him jumping higher then anyone else on the floor for a rebound (and Kung Foo kicking people.) We are getting our ***** kicked on rebounding margin. He could hit 3's which made him such a miss-mach. I also think McKay hasn't been himself this year because him and Hogue were so close.

Because had we not gotten the lucky falls under Hoiberg, we'd be having pretty much similar seasons. Many fans have such a revisionist history about the previous four years.

Did you lower last year too? Similar losses. That's you're own fault for getting into the hype.

Is Prohm the next McDoormat, doing less with more?
In four seasons McDoormat beat 1 ranked conference opponent. ONE! And that was his last regular season game as an ISU coach. I think CSP has tripled or quadrupled that already in his first season. And it's not over yet.

Comparing Prohm to McDermott is silly. McDermott would find a way for this team to finish 15-16 and 4 conference wins.

There is def something wrong with this team. Sitting at 6-5 in the conference and have yet to beat a good team on the road. Have lost 3 of 4 with the lone win coming against a bad OK St. team that didn't have its two best players - and even that game was super close at the end. Texas A&M hasn't won since beating Iowa St and has lost 4 of 5 to pretty bad teams. With the schedule ISU has left they could end up with 9 losses in the conference.

You think it might have it helped Hoiberg to have the likes of Kane, Ejim, Hogue, BDJ ?

Several thoughts. First, I do think we tend to overvalue the last few years teams. Certainly, this year's team's record is not quite what the last few years have been, but for the last several years we've been a team with some big wins and some head-scratching losses. No different this year.

However, I think anyone who has watched this team all year can tell something is just...off. I think it was 4-5 games into the year I first noticed that something just didn't seem right. I'm not sure if it is a chemistry issue, or the odd blend of a new coach and a bunch of upper classmen, or what, but something just seems off. A good example last night was after Monte's oop to Burton. Typically, they'd be jumping around, excited, the bench would run out after the timeout, etc. Instead, they all just kind of loafed over to the bench while Monte did this kind of half-assed raise the roof thing. It had a Jeb Bush "please clap" kind of feel to it. I just don't think they are having much fun.

I suppose Monte may be right that they are capable of beating anyone and any day in March. Really, our three big wins have all come at home, with a raucous crowd, so I question their ability to win big games away from Hilton. More than anything, March is about putting together 6 consecutive solid games. I just don't think these guys have that capability, but I'm hopeful.

Is Prohm the next McDoormat, doing less with more?

Then Fred must be more like Alford or Morgan - doing a lot less with a lot more. He had an even deeper and more talented team last year and lost to UAB in round 1, not to mention lost to a worse TTU team and many others.

Nice drama-queen posting, but it's time people stop worshiping Fred and better understand he was a human and had weaknesses, many that will impact us both this year and the next 1-2.

How does that make losing last night any more acceptable? Losing to a perennial bottom feeder in the conference doesn't suddenly become Ok just because Hoiberg struggled to beat them too.

No. Prohm does not have more. He had virtually the same team as Fred from last year, and now he has less with Naz out and McKay troubles. Prohm is actually doing the same as Fred with less.

They don't know how to play with a lead, even with Hoiberg. And they've never played well as favorites. The best year Hoiberg had, they played the underdog card, played with a chip on their shoulder and had toughness with Ejim & Kane. Plus depth

That team played 7 guys, got beat by 25 in Morgantown and was two miracles by Naz from going 9-9 in the conference. We've been the same team for 3 years, all you can do at this point is hope they make it to the second weekend of the tournament. In all honesty it will probably come down to whether or not Jameel wants to buy in the rest of the season

Hallice Cooke is usually good for 0-3 points a game with 2-3 turnovers while getting roasted on defense.

You can't really fault Cooke for not scoring when he plays <8 min/g. He was in a slump for a while but he was scoring when he got minutes.

Ashton plays better defense. Not that Hallice is bad. Hallice looks like he could be more capable on offense, but there's apparently something that Prohm knows or sees that we don't.

Some people think Ashton plays better on defense, I just don't see it. Didn't last night.

And I have to just pin it on Something I don't know, but I couldn't understand why Burton wasn't getting more minutes before the McKay suspension either and with Deonte's play I still don't get why that was the case.

I 100% support Prohm with the McKay suspension, but I really hope Cooke isn't playing b/c of some BS 'doghouse' issues that should be dealt with and resolved and moved on.
