what's wrong with this team?

We have the same players and their respective strengths and weaknesses that we've had the past few years where we did the exact same things. I think the biggest issue is fans haven't taken that into consideration when setting expectations.

We basically go 3 deep, have a skilled player that couldn't make a good decision to save his life (Nader), another that requires more ego stroking and medication than any player I've ever seen (McKay) and have no other legit Big XII caliber options.

Thank Fred, he shouldn't just get credit for the good things he accomplished without any mention of the bare cupboard he left us with.

Yeah we're just getting killed in these games because of our lack of talent

Nothing is wrong with this team. Your expectations need readjusted. This is a good team but not great. Hopefully they can make a good run in March but don't expect it.

Agree. The expectations were way too high for this team. The wild comebacks at the end of last year v. OU, UT contained a lot of luck that made this team seem better than they were. Throw in Naz's injury and McKays problems and here we are. This is a pretty good team. Solid 5 seed or so. I really see no problem with effort, smart play, selfish play than I do with any other team. There isn't some mystery about this team "not getting it". They just are not as good as most fans think they are. Honestly I see a pretty modest ceiling. Sure in the tourney anything can happen, but this team has no impressive wins on the road. Don't give me KSU, OSU or Cincy. Those are decent wins, but nothing that a top 20 team shouldn't expect to do. Maybe they get hot and do some damage. They are not good defensively, which means you will not do well in March unless you are absolutely elite on offense, which this team isn't. Provided Morris comes back I think next years team will be on the good side of expectations.

Injuries and lack of depth. When there is only one guy on the bench who is active and isn't playing you know you're in trouble.

Iowa State has to be the only team in the conference that lacks a guard coming of the bench that is a true threat to score.

We've been ranked between 18th and 21st each of the last three years in kenpom, we've basically been the same team three years running with the only difference our record in close games.

Usually I just prefer to lurk, but the bipolarism of this board is killing me.....

What if I told you....(last April)
1. We would lose Fred
2. We would lose 2+ games in Hilton
3. McKay would be on the brink of quitting
4. We finish in the bottom half of the Big12
5. We go into the tournament as an 8 seed

None of us would have believed this (maybe other than Fred leaving). This was supposed to be a can't miss season. It was supposed to be THE year. While I don't believe in attacking players personally, I think being disappointed and frustrated in the way this has played out is perfectly normal and acceptable. There seem to be a lot who put on the cardinal colored glasses and analyze who is a true cyclone fan, and that their support will never waiver, but any Cyclone fan should be upset, angry, frustrated. I've gotten to the point where the only way this is a successful season is if we make a deep run as somewhat of a cinderella, which is unlikely. I feel bad for Niang, I hope Prohm has a vision moving forward that will provide more success, but lets face it, circumstances happen, but as a fan, this season has been a trainwreck.

Cupboard isn't all that bare. Anytime a coach at Iowa State leaves an NCAA tourney team, the cupboard isn't really bare. Besides, Niang, Monte, Matt, Abdel, Jameel, Naz, Burton, and Cooke hardly make a bare cupboard. The Naz and Jameel situations are not Fred's fault. Or Prohm's fault.

First..the expectations were made by the team and we as fans followed..not the other way around.

Our problem is we have no dogs..we have no fighters. We have alot of talent but its finesse. We point to kane and ejim bc they were dogs...the kind of guys youd want in alley. Was thinking of our great teams and they all had that quality....stinson and blaylock, fizer, bankhead and pratt..just the toughest. They would have killed you to win.

This team? I feel like they never do more than they have to, to win.

There is not one underclassman getting minutes, except in emergency situations.

If Niang is in the "finesse" category then Ejim and Blalock have got to be in the finesse category too. Yeah, Kane and Stinson were very tough. But their teams had their share of frustrating losses too.

At the end of the day, we are Iowa State.

This sums up so much. If you would have told me all this after the UAB loss last year, I would have said "yeah, that seems about right."

You're crazy. Ejim was tough as nails. Would do what ever it took to win. Very intense dude.

Well fans fail to take into account that last years team should have had 5 or 6 more losses, and it was a fluke they won all those game where they fell behind double digits. Statistically it was like getting struck by lighting.

They added 1 top player and lost a top player.

Law of averages are just catching up this year.
