What's different this season??

Maybe I'm just missing it but it doesn't seem like there's as much smack being slung back and fourth. Is it still too early? Are both sides too nervous to talk any serious trash?

neither team is confident...

Last year the only smack I heard was we are worse than you are, no we are worse, no seriously we are worse.

I will talk smack with my friends because that's what we do. It's always been my opinion you have to smack before the game - if you lose, the opportunity is gone. If you win, you feel so bad for the guys you leave them alone (well.... almost alone).

Anyway, this game makes me nervous. There is a tremendous amount of ill will between the schools right now due to what has transpired in IC and what ISU fans have said about it. Iowa will come out energized for this game.

On the other hand, there is a reason Chizik talked "smack". I don't know the reason and won't guess, but I've never heard of another college coach saying those kinds of things so close to game time. I have to believe somehow he's trying to prepare the guys. And I really don't think it's bulletin board material for Iowa - it's nothing compared to the other things that have been said.

Iowa is going to come out and literally try to punch ISU in the mouth. ISU needs to respond in kind. I believe ISU has the better skill players and matches up better against Iowa than vice-versa due to the speed and spread offense factor. But we're going to have to do better defending the run and Stanzi is going to give us something to look at that we won't be able to be fully prepared for.

I can honestly see this game running a number of ways - from either side blowing out the other to a last second field goal. From high-scoring to a defensive battle. I'm usually pretty good at having a feel for a game, but not this year.

By the end of the season, I do believe ISU will have the superior team. How that plays out this weekend I have no clue.

If we're still talking about the coaches dinner, we can stop bringing this up.

I've been to maybe the last 10 "Meet the coaches nights". Danny Mac, LE, Fennelly, even Cael take plenty of shots at iowa every year. This year was only a little different because 1) Chizik is still a little new on the scene 2) very unexpected from him and 3) he had a wide range of very, very specific material to use from.

There has been far more worthy "bulletin board material" in years past.

Heck in '05 Danny Mac specifically called for a win by saying we're going to go over there and win for the 4th straight time in Iowa City.

If that isn't material, I don't know what is.

It's nothing new, and I doubt unique. I'll wager that there were plenty of quips at i-club events about Berryman coming back, LE's woes, etc and so on.

1st point: Not going to comment about that one
2nd point: It'll probably be Mitch King, and the way they are calling games this year (taunting, celebrating in the endzone) and with his history of being a classy player, I would say ISU better not respond in kind. All the response better be within the confines of the rules
3rd point: Agree.

The Iowa players have truely become dillusional. Their linebacker J. Hunter said in the Rag that they are playing for the National Championship. He must think that they played Florida or Florida State Saturday. I hope all their players are drinking the same thing as it will make them overlook lowly ISU.

Who is J. Hunter?

Someone didn't tell my UoI coworkers that we are not talking smack yet. I have been hearing it since I started there in January.

My ISU poster hangs very high over my desk :)

brianhos, I disagree. The ISU players and coaches are quietly very confident, just like the Utah players and coaches were a few weeks ago when they went into the big house and beat the wolverines.

No smack talk for one simple reason, I follow the rule Don't want none, don't start none.

I will attend the game and cheer for my Cyclones. I will let their play do the talking. I won't lie, I want this win worse than the win in 98, the one that broke the streak. I want kf (HPSE) to feel the wrath of the crappy Iowa fans, the ones that routinely boo their own team and players. I want Saturday to be the start of a season long chorus of booing by Hawkeye fans at their team and coaches. They have earned it. With the off the field problems, and the administrative corruption, I want every gameday to be miserable for the Hawks. I want whatever idiot or idiots keep buying extra seats so EIU can claim sellouts even with plenty of empty seats to keep having to do so.

Until kf is held responsible and finally dismissed, as he already should have been, I want all Hawkeye players, coaches, employees and fans to be miserable. Hopefully, this begins on Saturday, and I get to serve up some crap to those arrogant pr!cks in person.
Since I am not stepping on the field, and cannot directly affect the outcome, I will reserve talking smack until after the game.

I think that we are alot better than we were last year. I think that's pretty evident.

How is Iowa any better than they were last year? Please somebody answer that question.....I really feel like we are the better team.

We're within the week now so it can't be too early. I would bet it's because both teams are a bit nervous coming into this one. There is no clear cut favorite. No one is ranked, there are no huge name players on either side right now. I think there is quite a bit of uncertainty on both side right now. For one side to launch the smack talking, they have to be certain that their team will back it up. I don't see that this year.

There are too many question marks right now for anyone to really go out on a limb and claim to be vastly superior.

I'm not nervous about this game at all. And I don't need to talk smack because I'm just confident. As a matter of fact this may be the most confident I've felt about this game in a few years. But, confident of what? I'm confident that our players are ready, that we will match if not exceed their athleticism, and that this team can battle through adversity and will not quit. I would never be so stupid to be arrogant or overly confident about winning this rivalry game because it is always a dogfight and anything can happen (it has proven that on more than one occasion.)

People who talk smack do so because they are insecure and want to come off as confident by talking <$hit> And you know what just grinds hawk fans - silence. The quiet confidence makes them quite nervous I assure you.

This (3rd) week was the week we made the most improvement last year. If we can improve our open field tackeling this week I feel we can be in good position to win this one. I think Stanzi will be on a pretty short leash.
