Maybe I'm just missing it but it doesn't seem like there's as much smack being slung back and fourth. Is it still too early? Are both sides too nervous to talk any serious trash?

No, but thanks for posting to make sure some smack starts flying.

It don't matter which QB Iowa plays.

The first time he's sacked, his helmet is going to fly off, and his head will still be in it.

Kind of like in the Naked Gun when the outfielder goes back to the wall, jumps up to catch the ball, and hits the top of the wall and his head pops off.

In all seriousness, though, I think it is a little early.

Last year the only ones talking smack were Iowa because they "knew" they were going to win, and we agreed. Yet this year, they are not so sure so they are sitting back and making sure they don't have to eat crow.

Honestly though, I'm getting my fill of smack at HR. HN is pretty normal-headed, but some of the posters on HR like TSAHawk have lost their mind.

The problem is Iowa fans really have no smack to talk. There team is unkown and the superbowl thing is pretty dumb if you ask anyone. Just sound like a broken record.
Also we don't have the Mcdonalds Uni's anymore so the Clowns arguement is bad. Also the Hawks lost last time so what can they really say.

All the hawks fans I have talked to were more impressed by the Kent State game than I was. Maybe ui fans are a little more nervous/subdued going into this one.

Also not much for the ui fans to bring up when there are so many issues with the Convicts...errr hawks.

We're within the week now so it can't be too early. I would bet it's because both teams are a bit nervous coming into this one. There is no clear cut favorite. No one is ranked, there are no huge name players on either side right now. I think there is quite a bit of uncertainty on both side right now. For one side to launch the smack talking, they have to be certain that their team will back it up. I don't see that this year.

There are too many question marks right now for anyone to really go out on a limb and claim to be vastly superior.

Apparently you missed all your Hawk buddies coming on here Saturday and Sunday night saying how unbeatable they are.

I think MOST Iowa State fans are smart enough to keep their mouths shut and just let the Hawks keep talking and digging themselves a hole.

I for one, haven't said a word to any of my friends and will wait until Saturday afternoon before I say anything.

It's not too early. IMO both sides are questioning whether or not their team has what it takes to beat the other. This makes me proud, as it's a testament to the rivalry being even. I would feel confident as an EIU fan right now with home field advantage on our side, but at the same time I'm somewhat confident as an ISU fan. This is one of the first years I've gone into this game with a giant question mark over my head.

Quickly, someone call Guiness! Someone thinks there is an Iowa fan with an actual mind!

Good post....agree completely.

QB is progressing rather than regressing
RBs are more experienced
WRs are about the same.
OL better than last year
DL a bit worse than last year
LBs again a bit worse
DBs better
Special Teams are way way way better

Overall we are a much better team

It'll be full blown by the end of the week I'm sure. I think since the series has not been so lopsided in favor of the Hawks some of the trash talk from that side has been toned down a little. We'll still have idiots from both fan bases make crazy remarks and predictions but I think since this series has become more competitive over the last decade that there is more respect for who you are playing since on a given year lately you have no idea going into the game who is going to come out the winner. Iowa may sometimes have the better team on paper but doesn't play like it when it comes gameday. This year I think both teams are fairly even at the moment.

I think it's the economy.

I will talk smack with my friends because that's what we do. It's always been my opinion you have to smack before the game - if you lose, the opportunity is gone. If you win, you feel so bad for the guys you leave them alone (well.... almost alone).

Anyway, this game makes me nervous. There is a tremendous amount of ill will between the schools right now due to what has transpired in IC and what ISU fans have said about it. Iowa will come out energized for this game.

On the other hand, there is a reason Chizik talked "smack". I don't know the reason and won't guess, but I've never heard of another college coach saying those kinds of things so close to game time. I have to believe somehow he's trying to prepare the guys. And I really don't think it's bulletin board material for Iowa - it's nothing compared to the other things that have been said.

Iowa is going to come out and literally try to punch ISU in the mouth. ISU needs to respond in kind. I believe ISU has the better skill players and matches up better against Iowa than vice-versa due to the speed and spread offense factor. But we're going to have to do better defending the run and Stanzi is going to give us something to look at that we won't be able to be fully prepared for.

I can honestly see this game running a number of ways - from either side blowing out the other to a last second field goal. From high-scoring to a defensive battle. I'm usually pretty good at having a feel for a game, but not this year.

By the end of the season, I do believe ISU will have the superior team. How that plays out this weekend I have no clue.

The Iowa players have truely become dillusional. Their linebacker J. Hunter said in the Rag that they are playing for the National Championship. He must think that they played Florida or Florida State Saturday. I hope all their players are drinking the same thing as it will make them overlook lowly ISU.
