What Would Wally Do????

The one against us in '08 was.

Either way, Griffin was getting absolutely lit up, and just chucked it off his back foot, right on the money.

Just watching the KSU game, he was better in the pocket than outside of it. Noticeably. He's going to get his yards and make a lot of plays, but I feel like you want us to say "he can't even be slowed, so don't even discuss it". He can be slowed, and Baylor can be beat. They just were, and I hope that our staff is poring over that KSU game tape.

We can definitely be slowed and stopped. I do think that it requires the DL to get good pressure though. You can blitz a little but too much simply invites too many big plays much like Texas Tech discovered against Arnaud last year. Unless you get good pressure on RG3 you are at the mercy of how accurate he is on a given day.

I do worry about us stopping ISU for the record. I was simply responding to how our offense was being discussed with my comments here.

Yeah, you can't blitz him every down, but you can't just rush 4 all night either. Unless those 4 are getting to the QB.

i was happy to finally see a double A-gap blitz against texas and that could be effective against griffin because he likes to stay in the pocket get him going east west and have the DE's play contain he will make bad reads and we could get a TO off of that look with 5 guys still back in coverage in cover 2 or man under zone

You scrap your defense every week besides base if you are a good D-Coordinator (Wally is). Its new techniques, new positions every week. You adapt or die. Especially in the B12, Iowa would struggle with their defense in the Big 12, Cover 3 or 2 and man to the sidelines don't work in this conference.

Have to spy RG3 every play besides 3rd and long, takes one or two guys out of coverage, but its necessary, even if he can hit 90%.
The only blitzes that will work, will be on the outside with nickle or corners, Baylor is too fast. If we don't contain the pocket, we're in trouble.
Its a double edged sword when RG can throw just as well as pass, we just have to find a good balance. Last weeks tape from KSU and BU will help. A lot.

We're not going to get pressure, so you can throw that out. ISU does not get to the QB. Our best bet is Knott and Klein playing assignment football, and not getting burnt in coverage situations with WR screens.

The second halfs for both TCU and KSU when they had a great deal of success slowing down Baylor's offense had a common theme Kendal Wright was taken out of the game. Baylor had a difficult time moving the ball when they can't get big plays out of Wright. TCU played zone the first half and got torched and KSU played single coverage on him in the first and had the same result. Wright needs to be doubled or shade the safety over to him.

If ISU can limit Wright and force RG to run some and take hits he will turn the ball over some he carries the ball loose a lot and that is somthing that can be taken advantage of.

We absolutely can't have the 3-and-outs that take about 90 seconds off the clock. I think we can get some stops if we make them go the whole field, can't give them a short field though.

I heard and interview with the Baylor radio guy yesterday. He said K-State did not blitz much. FWIW

I don't think you can win by blitzing a mobile QB like RG3, he is just too fast, too hard to catch. I think you need to send someone fast on a delayed blitz once in a while, which is what KSU did. Mostly you have to take away the huge plays and hope that they stumble on a 10-12 play drive. RG3 is an absolute stud, the best defense is hoping he has an off day.

I disagree.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think we can get pressure of the QB? I haven't see anything that would make me believe that. I agree that our best bet may be playing assignment football. You bring a blitz and can't get to the QB (which is how our blitzes have seemed to work this far) you leave yourself open for a big play or you leave yourself vulnerable downfield if RG3 breaks the pocket.

We haven't played teams that have thrown the ball much for one so it isn't something that stand out. At times, we have been able to get very good pressure on the QB. I think we will get some pressure this weekend. Is it going to be every play? No, but I think it can be enough to disrupt RG3 and maybe force some turnovers.

From what I saw of the TCU game they got torched when they blitzed in the first half. It looked to me like the moved to more of a base defense where they could keep everything in front of them and they played much better.

What would Wally Burnham do
if he were here right now?
I'd say he'd kick an *** or two
that's what Wally Burnham would do!

When Wally Burnham was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.

When Wally Burnham was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical fire breath,
And saved the maidens fair.

When Wally Burnham travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil robot kings
and saved the human race again .

And when Wally Burnham built the pyramids,
He beat up Kublai Khan.

Cos Wally Burnham doesn't take **** from an-e-y-body...

Baylor is really good on offense. Griffin is one of the best in the country and they could go "Utah" on us if we don't bring our A game. I don't see our D keeping them under 40 points. I think we can win but our offense is going to have to play four quarters and score points constantly. This might be the worst defense we have faced this season so it is possible.

I could see this one getting really ugly, but I can also imagine a Texas Tech kind of win "52-45ish."

I disagree.

I think we have to define "pressure" to get any clear majority opinion as defining it one way or another changes the answer completely.

For me, "getting pressure without blitzing" means:

Applying enough quick pressure to hit the qb, flush him out of the pocket, or otherwise affect the throw without it simply being a factor of him holding onto the ball for a long time.

"Consistent pressure" is the ability to do this on at least 1/3 of the dropbacks.

I think both teams will struggle to do that but I do feel they will each get good 4 man pressure occasionally, just not enough to match the definition listed above.

nuff said! I forgot he built the pyramids. Maybe we are in better shape than I imagined. I bet he can shoot laser beams out of his eyeballs and evaporate all off Griffin's deep throws.
