What would cause TJ to move?

I heard Jalen is up next.

I was going to ask about the money but thanks to whoever posted it. 3 mil in Ankeny is pretty nice. Ankeny is not, but the 3 mil works :otz:

Give him competitive NIL resources and he isn't going anywhere
Agreed if they continue to let him be very competitive in recruiting and don’t cut cost or something like that I don’t think he’d ever leave. As long as pollards at the helm I can’t imagine that either

I don't think so. Part of the reason Johnny came to us was that Michigan's juggernaut football team so over-shadowed basketball, that he had
to get out of football's shadow.
His last few years at Michigan were only OK. Honestly I just looked that up and was reminded at how meh his league record was at ISU.

Argh! Michigan speculation here. Another reason to hate the B1G and SEC. They probably think they can just snap their fingers and get whatever coach they want. And they will have the money to back it up for many.

Juwan Howard – Michigan

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports
Season Record: 7-11
Overall Record: 86-59
The Juwan Howard era at Michigan has plummeted downhill since the team’s 23-5 season in 2020-21, and with multiple controversies surrounding the program and their head coach, it might already be time to pull the plug and start looking elsewhere for a new head man.
Administration needs to focus on landing an experienced coach and a strong recruiter, and if they can convince T.J. Otzelberger to leave Iowa State and the Big 12 they will be in a great position to return to prominence quickly.
Otzelberger has deep connections in the Midwest, has a strong reputation as a lead recruiter, and is a winning coach from his time at UNLV and now with the Cyclones in the loaded Big 12.
Replacement: T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa State)

Tang to Texas and DeVries to OSU….this list is lazy but Tang to Texas at least makes a little sense

I have zero concerns of TJ going to Michigan but let’s be honest the Michigan job should be one of the most coveted jobs in college basketball. Michigan has plenty of in state talent. Chicago also isn’t that far away. Also a lot of financial support there.
“Should be” being the key phrase.

Same could be said about a lot of schools who are dramatically underachieving. Many of them Big 10 schools ironically (Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, etc).

Well he hit THAT nail on the head!

Tang to Texas made me laugh.
It will be very interesting to see where Tang takes kstate. He's been there 1 year, had a very good 1st year. This year, not so much. Yet the article says he is "one of the best coaches in all of college basketball". Yeah, I had to laugh at that too. Way too early to say that.

I'm wondering if he is/was just a one year wonder. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

No inside knowledge here but a serious answer to @t-noah and the question...

-- The most obvious one: Pollard has to retire at some point. He's already had one serious health crisis, and while I'm sure being the Iowa State AD is fun, he can't work or live forever. New guy or gal comes in and TJ not getting along with them is the obvious point of failure/departure for this situation.

Pollard is the reason we have TJ (who wanted to work for him) and have kept Campbell (he likes working for Pollard and wants the autonomy over his program that comes with it). Gotta nail that hire.

-- TJ has done a good job identifying and recruiting players who want some combination of getting better, winning, being part of a close-knit program, want to be in Iowa, want to play in the Big 12, and/or want to be Cyclones. That's not to say NIL doesn't matter at all, though. If Iowa State falls too far behind and the sport completely becomes a mercenary one to the point there's no possibility Iowa State can compete at least in the conference, then I wouldn't blame any coach leaving for where he has the resources he needs.

This NIL roller coaster isn't even to the end of the first drop. How it shakes out in the long term once the Wild West period is over is going to be crucial to how attractive Iowa State can be to a guy like TJ.

Outside of those two crises, I can't really think of much of anything.

The fan base isn't going anywhere. The Hilton home court advantage isn't going anywhere. I doubt the Big 12 will lose its premier status with Arizona coming in and Houston here. TJ and Allison's personal connections to Iowa State and Iowa generally aren't going anywhere (at least until Pollard and Fennelly retire, which have to be approaching sometime in the next decade). I don't think he has any interest in the NBA.

Maybe someday the money printer that the Big Ten and SEC have will win out. But that's not going to be soon. I think something bigger about Iowa State or the sport needs to change to drive TJ off.
