He also advocated for a later early signing period, whcih would again, hurt the big 12. This feels short sighted, and he hasn't given us any reason to give him a benefit of the doubt. I don't get why anyone is defending him here.
If there are no auto qualifiers, there's no gauranteed spot for a big twelve team. That is bad for the big twelve. Especially when the media narrative is we are now a second class conference after OU and UT leave.
I agree that 8 is the ideal playoff #. After all, there are already Conference Championship games.
Go with 8 teams with each P5 getting an auto qualifier. A G5 school gets autobid if it is ranked in Top 10. Then take 2 or 3 highest rated teams.
Get rid of committee. Set up rating process- aka computer or composite of Coaches/AP/etc. polls.
I would have no problem eliminating auto qualifier for P5 conference if that conference doesn't win a playoff game over 3 or 4 year window.
If we cant be one of the top six conference champions who gives a **** as we have bigger problems. There is a reason the pac-12 doesn’t like the proposal. They suck.
The early signing period should be looked at. Having coaches get fired in October isn't great for the sport. Just because schools want to give new coach a chance to salvage a Dec. recruiting class.
The article I saw talked about moving early signing date back to after Ntnl Championship game. That wouldn't be the end of the world.
I tend to think signing dates are antiquated. Let kids sign whenever they want after June 1 of their junior year. Create a couple restrictions/player outs:
- Kids can't sign LOI until 72 after visit. So coaches can't pressure kid to sign on visit.
- Let kids break LOI if Head Coach or player's Position Coach leaves.
Did Bowlsby say what he thought was best for football? Or did he just say that he thought 12 teams with Power 5 AQs was not best for football?

It is in the other conferences best interest to relegate us to a non power conference. One less person taking the pie. We have to assert ourselves and ensure we have a place at the table. Bowlsby's comments don't inspire confidence in this resepct.
I frame everything through a "what's best for the B12" lens. The early signing period was to avoid later poaching. We are more likely to be poached than stronger teams. I think the early signing period is good for B12 teams.
So you think the B12 presidents and AD's are good with saying the B12 having an AQ to the playoff is a bad thing for the sport? I highly doubt that.

Big12 can be a swing vote, that makes it marginally rather valuable. Bob is leveraging that.
I don't mean this as an insult, but I know many on this board are younger, maybe not a lot of business/sales/negotiation experience. So this **** dance looks like he is saying something stupid at face value. But what he is really saying ,between the lines, is he will put out -- just not for free.

I just don't see any time where Bowlsby has given us a reason to trust him in these situations. As a side, I'm an attorney and do negotiations on a daily basis... and that's one of the main reasons I'm skeptical and frustrated. Publicly and privately, it doesn't serve you well to undermine your best position.

The SEC should get 3 or 4 teams some years if they expand to 12 just like it should get 2 or maybe even 3 if it’s 8. It’s the best conference and now also the largest.
At 12 teams if we get one every year and two lots of years that’s good. I think at 12 we get 2 teams more often than one. At 8 with just two at large we’d rarely get two and likely rarely deserve two. The AQ matters above all.
