What needs changing in Ames first?

Besides, what hotel chain would EVER want to build a location right in the middle of a dense concentration of noisy, destructive frat boys and far away from any high-traffic roads? It's an abysmal location for a hotel.

Have you been to the ped mall in IC?

I had every intention of taking the kids to my favorite breakfast joint the following morning and was devastated to see the CYCLONE TRUCK STOP was closed! They had it all, from greasy omelets to huge cinnamon rolls - it's a travesty!

I have been hearing some rumors that Menards bought all of that land.

All my life. And do you see any greek housing anywhere nearby? No. Iowa City's ped mall is a business area, and has a very heavy police presence when the bars are busy. ISU's Frat Row is entirely residential, has lots of house parties, and is close to the bars that the area's residents spend time at.

Let's put it this way- go out to Buchanan Hall's parking lot and check out the grounds and vehicles at 5:00 or 6:00am any Saturday or Sunday morning. If that were happening on the grounds of a privately owned hotel filled with parents or other normal adults, they would absolutely flip their lids. The hotel's manager would be getting nasty phone calls within a week of the place opening. I am telling you in no uncertain terms, both as someone who's lived in Iowa City all his life and as someone who's lived in Buchanan Hall for quite a while, the two areas are very different, and Buchana's location is entirely unsuitable for any sort of privately-owned business, much less a hotel.

Or find ways to stem the loss, like make Hilton a venue capable of competing with Wellsfargo again. Lets face it, to a Concert Tour Des Moines is a better market, so our facility has to be something decent to compete with whatever they have there, however crappy it may or may not be

This may actually happen. Speculation is that more concert tour promoters will choose Hilton once it is completely under AD control. Why? Because then the promoters don't have to deal with SMG anymore.

Just think...all this time it could have been the management group and not necessarily just the venue that was responsible for diverting concert tours to WFA and QCO (Qwest Center Omaha).

I love Ames but it needs two things:
1. Better places to eat (Olive Garden, TGIF, Hardee's, Church's Chicken)
2. Better clubs. And I don't mean bars. I mean clubs. There is a difference!

I guess I'm proud of the Greek's sound like they are throwing non-stop 24/7 keggers and everyone's running around drunk with a sense of wreckless abandonment. Awesome! Cant wait to see all the naked drunk people passed out in Buchannan when I'm up there next!

ps I've lived and IC and ped mall is not that well policed.

And here I was thinking that the Athletic department taking over was going to hurt us in terms of concerts... I'd sure glad to be misinformed though! I've just been pretty sad about how a lot of stuff has been going south the last year or two

1. All of those sound like good options
2. You need to have real clubs before you can have better clubs

I have been hearing some rumors that Menards bought all of that land.

Menards tried to build on the piece of ground just to the west of the old Cyclone Truck Stop, but Ames City Council denied their request to amend the land use plan that would allow for it. The rumor about them going into the old truck stop is just a rumor at this point, and to my understanding they have not bought or leased the land.

The problem with clubs is historically they have not done well in Ames. There was a extremely popular Country-Western club in the early 2000s (anyone remember the name?) that lasted only about a year in spite of its popularity.

The BLUE OYSTER?

Wasnt out by Benson's Buick though?
-I miss Bensons 5 for 5 and Lou during halftime

Lets face it... people in Ames prefer drinking to dancing, even if it is drunk dancing

People in Ames also don't like to pay cover to drink, or pay for expensive drinks when there are so many cheap drink specials that abound

Hunky Dory's owned by the same guy who owns Hickory Park (won't start that topic again). It is now Hickory Hall and they have receptions there. The last time I was in it, it still had the same look as Hunky's did. Big Palm tree, etc.

Ill pay a cover if the crowd is good and the music doesnt suck. If you had a nicer dance bar, I think it would do well. If its slummy people wont participate.

I'm too old or not fun enough for clubs. When I was in college I would have been all for it. Now, I enjoy sports bars the most.

Any more news on the Wal-Greens rumor at Duff and Lincoln Way that I have also been heard floating around?

Me too, but when I was at that age, thats how I felt.

Yep. I just had so little money in college and 99% of it went toward alcohol, so I have to put myself in the liking the cheap, cheap, cheap specials category back then.

Well, having a boyfriend and a best friend that worked at the bar helped with saving some $ too. Thanks Ripvdub!
