What is Going On with Emily Ryan?

After reading this I will attempt to guess this team's record.

3-24 (1-16).

Am I close?
Don't be an idiot. People are speculating why the team may not have the potential they did last year. First loss to KU after 16 wins. Speculation is warranted. Apparently your satisfied with teams performance. Go buy your kids participation medals.

I have to disagree with quite a few of your points.
1. time on court. This is year three for Donarski and Ryan playing nearly the same number of minutes. They are used to it. It’s rare for any star players on any team to rest unless (a) they are in a blowout or (b) they have really good bench players (like Baylor in the past)
2. M&M needs more playing time. She has struggled all year regardless of playing time. Coach Fen says she’ll playing hurt. That’s not going to change.
3. The offensive sets are pretty much the same that we've seen the last few years. The biggest difference is we aren’t hitting the three ball as in past years. This has hurt in many ways.
4. completely agree that Ashley isn’t getting calls she used to get. Officiating is very spotty in women’s basketball. But…yesterday she was having a bad shooting day and got to the line for something like 15 attempts.
5. being a defensive stopper shouldn’t slow any offensive development. It’s not like they pulled her aside in practice and said “all your reps are going to be playing defense…no offense for you!” (That’s my parody of the soup nazi). She shot quite well last year. She and Ryan are both shooting worse this year.
1. Ashley, Lexi and Emily would all benefit from more rest. But that is not going to happen this year.
2. At this point M&M is not going to play more and most likely would not play well given the lack of playing time the last two years.
3. Good coaches adjust to personnel. Bill is a great coach. I don't think the sets are bad, but we are pretty old school with our philosophy. We are consistently running half court sets and dribbling a lot. When Lex and Emily were freshman, we pushed the ball a lot more. It was emphasized how many different girls could just rebound and go.
4. As bad as big 12 officials are in the men's game, they are worse in the women's game. Very inconsistent.
5. Being matched up on the best offensive player for the other team is very physically demanding. She is great at it, but it has 100% affected her offense.

Joens, Ryan
I think anyone who has followed them women has seen this coming. Both her and Lexi have to be gassed and I wouldn't be surprised if they are nursing injuries.

She played 40 against Tech when we won by 23 points. She played 35 minutes against TCU in a game we won by 28 points. She played 36 minutes in a game we won by 31 against Michigan State. She played all 40 minutes against Iowa when we were well out of the game in the 4th quarter.

Bill hasn't exactly done a great job managing her minutes and she looks a step slow and tired. That's where the fouls come in

Joens, Ryan and Donarski are all averaging 35 min on the season.
ISU goes eight deep. Four players ave 30+ per

I took a look at other teams in the conference For comparison.
Baylor - they play ten deep double digit minutes. Three players ave 31+ per. A fourth is right at 30.
OU - same thing. They go eleven deep in their rotation. Four players average 27 per
OSU - goes nine deep with three players right at 30 min per game
Texas - goes nine deep. Harmon averages nearly 36 per game. Gonzalez at 33
TTU - goes ten deep and two players average 30 per
KSU - goes eight deep. Three players average between 35 and 37 min per
KU - goes 8-11 deep. Four players average just short of 30 minutes per
WVU - goes ten deep. Two players average 30+ per
TCU - goes ten deep. One players averages + per

1. Time on court. Nailed it. Why play your point guard 40 minutes in a blowout? MEM not playing 15 minutes a game is a mystery. She is pulled upon making any mistake and this has caused a self confidence issue naturally. She comes into the KU game at the very end. What does she do? She makes a beautiful bounce pass to a cutting Ryan for a layup! Don't want to hear it is for her defensive ability or lack thereof. Our guards got torched by KU small diminutive guards who raced by our gals and forced contact. We backed off and they drained 3s like they haven't done all year. We have a tired team. Otherwise explain why Kansas goes for 98 after holding them to 60s in Ames.

2. Ashley still receives calls because she is a superstar and she is fouled worse than a sparring partner. Watch every time down court how opposing defenses push, shove , elbow her as she cuts across the lane. She never complains , gets knocked down, and is probably our fiercest competitor I've ever witnessed in a Cyclone uniform.

3. Soares. I spoke to Coach F before the season and he "beamed" when mentioning her name. He saw her do things in practice he has never seen from a 6'6" post. This was their year we could complete with the Stanfords, U Conn, etc. because of the returning talent and Soares. When she went down , it felt like we went into a massive hangover. Hell I was depressed.

Future - This team can still beat teams when we can shoot the 3 well. Fritz is blossoming before our eyes. She is competitor #2 on the team. Keep Em and Lexi rested, hope Kane can contain opposing bigs, and this team can still be a Sweet 16 team. Go State!

It appears people aren’t paying attention to what Coach and others have said about M&M. She is INJURED. She is playing through it, but is very limited by it. More minutes arent In the books because of it. I suspect that (the injury) is also impacting her shot. Even with the injury she’s playing as much as she did last year…right at ten per game average.

Despite what you may have heard (even from coaches), I can assure you that MEM is not injured. She is as healthy as she has been since freshman year. Appears that Fen has moved on and not interested in playing the older players like Maggie despite the impact she has had as of late. We have seen this before and seems odd that he doesn't want to play who is available to contribute now.

Comparing this year to last, Ryan is averaging the exact same number of turnovers and steals per game, 1.2 more rebounds, and 0.4 fewer assists. So she's been very comparable on the non-scoring numbers. However, scoring efficiency is the difference, shooting four percentage points lower from three.

She's not alone in that regard. Every player (other than Fritz and Kane, technically) is shooting worse from three than they did last year. I think many of the team struggles this season are attributable to that simple fact. My guess is as good as yours as to why that is, but it's not a recent phenomenon, which would point away from fatigue. This entire season the shooting has been worse than last year.

And you know this because? She does not look/play like someone who is totally healthy. I wish we has the MEM of her freshman year but I have not seem that and have only missed one home game

Other than CBF saying so, what makes you think she’s injured? I don’t see any hitch in her giddy-up and she hasn’t said anything - we always knew injury specifics in year’s past. I believe the primary issue plaguing her is damaged confidence!

Regardless of her health - she is shooting 26% overall - 19% from three, 19 assists / 19 turnovers and is a big defensive liability - what in that means she deserves more PT???? Not sure what "impact" she has had of late.

It seems to me that the head coach saying she is seems like it should be the default position, rather than someone on CF claiming she isn't. I also don't think it should be all that surprising given her history of nagging stress injuries, plus her struggles on the court.

That and maybe a touch of opposing coaches figuring out how to frustrate her and cause turnovers and fouls.
I subscribe to this theory. Quick and crafty Rory Harmon exploited Ryan’s athletic limitations last season and coaches aren’t blind. They are going straight after her with quicker guards (WVU, OSU, BU, KU) and she can’t stay in front of them. You can’t fix slow, and her frustrations are leading to foul trouble.

It’d be nice if she used her superior size to post up these smaller guards, but that doesn’t seem to be in the game plan.

I was just looking at her shooting %s too.
In conference games Emily's 3pt shooting is down almost 20% from last year.
From a ridiculous 54.1% to a pedestrian 34.6%.

She proved during year 1 and year 2 to be at least a quality backup Big 12 guard. She struggled with injury last year. This year, in my opinion, she has not been given a fair shake. It has definitely affected her play. It can’t be fixed now.

Thanks for posting. Looking forward to hearing from you again in 10 or so years.

Last home game my wife even commented about how M&M walked like she was hurting coming off the floor…so yes…I’ve seen it.

She is playing just as many minutes this year as last year.
