A common answer would involve extrapolating forward as far as possible, such as "McCarney would still be coaching..." or long-term lift for the program -- and such.

Simpler view: worst case, it would have changed reality the following ways:
1. Two division titles and two appearances in conference championship game, back-to-back seasons.
2. 2004 team finishes 7-6 with Big 12 title loss and bowl loss (probably with better bowl bid).
3. 2005 team finishes 8-5 with Big 12 title loss and bowl loss (probably with better bid).
