What if, 4 team dream

What if ISU played in a bowl game that mattered? What if ISU ended up in the Mtn West when things were nearly to that point in 2011? What if the B12 got some mediocre teams to join that ISU could beat in football and stabilize the conference. No big name is coming to the B12. It's a dream in the sense that ISU football would have a chance to be relevant to people outside Ames and surrounding towns. If things go like they did in 2011, once again, who wants ISU?
Terrible idea, I think it'll be 8 - 10 team conferences, play 9 conference games and 3 non conference.
A stable conference is more important than finding Iowa State some winnable football games. Adding historically mediocre programs is not a long term solution.
But who that has history is picking the B12 as a home? Ideally getting a historic program would be great. If B10 or SEC want them they will go there. B10 and their $$ is eyeing expansion.
Grab some teams now to be stable, then when the ACC implodes grab what the B10 and SEC don't grab.
After ACC implodes, Pitt, BC, and Syracuse would be available to join. They don't fit SEC and Big10 will already have their part in that market.
The big 10 was at 11 for quite a while. Why not grab cinci and wait for some other teams to open up. We should have done this with Louisville, been saying that since the break-up. I'm sure it's not as easy as it sounds but hope we start getting aggressive.
If we are dreaming about four teams coming the the B12, screw anyone that is currently available. Give me FSU, Clemson, Louisville and Notre Dame. FSU and Clemson can't get in the SEC, as they don't help the SEC much as the SEC already has South Carolina and Florida. Notre Dame probably would never go to either the SEC or B1G if it was forced to join a conference. Louisville really should be the B12 already we were stupid not to grab TCU in my opinion. Should have added Louisville to be a travel partner with WVU, also boosted our Eastern reach.
Those are just Four I would want, and the only one I can really say that is questionable is Louisville. But Virginia would rather been in the B1G, VA Tech Seems more SEC, Pitt doesn't do anything for me. UNC, Duke and NC State probably all stay together because they care more about basketball than football. I suppose you could make an argument about Georgia Tech but my guess is the B1G would want them. Maybe you if you can you grab Miami and GT Or one of the North Carolina schools if they don't want to stay in a basketball conference, and get 6 additional teams.
Anyway this will never happen. I am pretty sure OU and Texas have decided they will hold the B12 hostage until the grant of rights runs out or doesn't hold any weight and they will either run together somewhere or run their separate ways.
Really, I wish we would just all figure out that College sports are on their last legs, and more than likely within my lifetime, they will ceases to exist like they currently do. A move that makes major college athletics a minor league system for the NFL and NBA is probably more likely than the B12 surviving past 2024.

Not sure where you're going with this, but schools like KU, Cincinatti, UCONN, and a few others have played in bowl games that 'mattered', and it didn't matter in the long run.
Was implying if ISU played in a major bowl game, how crazy would the fan base be about it. If ISU made a run like KU did how many fans would show up? 40,50,60k? How crazy would the buzz be that season? Bringing in schools that want to be in the B12 at this time would help ISU chances of this and would set a better structure under the B12 until some bigger names become available.
Back when geographic proximity mattered rather than TV markets, I thought that Arkansas belonged in the Big 12, especially when Missouri was a member.

What if 50% of the Iowa St fan base didn't play "what if" we played Iowas schedule? What if that 50% last year in late October, November was more worried about how things were going in Ames and not concerned about "I hope Iowa finally gets beat." Yes, both fan bases have a segment that do that, but it's a waste of time.
As an Iowa State fan, I find it takes almost no time or trouble for me also to hope Iowa gets beat. It is a fairly easy thing to add to my Cyclone fan experience.
A) Bringing in crappy football programs does nothing to help conference stability no matter how awesome their basketball history is.
B) Assuming ISU can regularly beat any of the popular expansion candidates on the gridiron is far from a guarantee.
C) No major schools will want to join a watered down conference.
That being said, I'm in favor of adding up to four teams with the best football growth potential. No one gives a **** about college football in the Northeast. No one gives a **** about directional Florida schools.
The biggest benefit that Iowa State has to potentially gain from expansion would be the addition of an extra non conference game if we drop to 8 annual league contests. Free up some room for another cupcake.
Next we need to get better at scheduling cupcakes. Getting raped by Utah & North Dakota State or embarrassed by UCONN at the end of the 2002 season is not how it's done.
