What do you all think of this guy?

I'm sure you know Wikipedia is hardly a comprehensive source of information. He was the recruiting coordinator at Nebraska from 2001 - 2003. During that time, Nebraska went to the national title game in 2001. Source here.

Kagavi - now thats some good info.... At least we can agree that he's spent some time in the trenches of a serious Div I program which is in fact enlightening....

Thanks,
K

Whitewater is a small step above good big-school high school football. I think this guy would be a disaster on the recruiting trail. Pretty big jump. Is he being mentioned just because he's from Wisconsin and JP knows him?

I don't know whether I would like the hire or not, but your first statement is so far from the truth it isn't even funny.

I'm confused by this mentality. Is the idea of some fans that our program needs to be scrapped and rebuilt?

"Scrapped and rebuilt" implies that there was something there to begin with. If we're being brutally honest about the history of Iowa State football, we've got a foundation, maybe some framing up. This is a building job, and we need a general contractor. The best interior decorator in the world can't do **** if there aren't any walls to work with.

When he took over at UW-W, yes they had just been runner up in the DIII title game the last two years, but had never won a title in program history. Leipold proceeded to win a title in his first year, then again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

Leipold is the fastest coach to 100 victories in the history of football. The previous coach he beat was Gil Dobie, who is a charter member of the College Football Hall of Fame. I'm very familiar with Dobie from our Jack Trice research--Dobie only went 58 - 0 - 3 at U of Washington. Slacker.

We could do a lot worse, and in fact have done much worse many times.

True, UW-W had never won a national title prior to 2007, but they were already a very successful program. In the 50 years prior to Liepold (1956-2006), they had a total of 5 losing seasons, and 19 conference championships. They sit right in the Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago triangle, where there are a lot of good football players, but not good enough for Wisconsin, Northwestern, or Northern Illinois. Wisconsin has no JUCOs and no D-II programs, so a lot of them go play WIAC football.

I'm not saying he can't win here, my concern is that his (extremely impressive) accomplishments come from a different situation than he would face here. Culture and situation matter. If we plucked a Les Miles or Mark Richt or Bob Stoops and dropped them in the Jacobson building tomorrow, there's no guarantee they'd be successful, because life's different when you coach at a destination school with the best recruits money can buy (see also: Chizik, Gene). Similarly, if Texas hires a Charlie Strong or Bill Snyder, they might not be successful at that higher level because they stress fundamentals and don't have the experience kowtowing to donors and prima donna 5-star recruits (see also: McDermott, Greg)

A lot of these concerns would be alleviated if we had more than a single season at Buffalo as a sample size to evaluate how he would do at the FBS level.

Hasn't whitewater been a powerhouse for a long long time? He basically just had to not screw it up
Yes. Had undefeated regular seasons and lost in the national championship each of the 2 years prior to him getting there. I would question his ability to build anything.

All of my Whitewater buddies would be thrilled. Not sure how I feel about it though. Thats quite a leap.

I agree. I think he'd have a lot better luck at a school like Iowa, where he could play against DIII caliber talent 10 of 12 games per year.
