What do we do with an open scholly?

As of now, if Gilstrap does not get a second year, we will have 4 schollies for 2010. That is the graduation of Gilstrap and JVB and 2 open schollies. 1 goes to Dykstra so we are left with 3. IMO, we need to leave 2 open in case Ejim and Barnes decide to give us one of the best recruiting classes we have ever had. That last one is the one opened up by Eik leaving. I say we use that only if we can get a very good player from this year. Maybe a Mike Taylor type player without the baggage. Otherwise, we may as well use that scholly and recruit another difference maker at guard next year. I can't forsee Brackins staying past next season, if he stays that long, so we will still have a scholly open if we want to offer Kelm. I really hope I counted right on the scholly situation.

Since Michael's other son plays for Illinois, has that helped their doantions? Is MJ giving money to Illinois?

As a fan maybe it would give you a warm fuzzy to see MJ in the stands, but I have a tough time believing a kid is going to come to ISU because MJ's son plays for ISU. We need the best players and daddy shouldn't be considered. How much has having Carlos Boozer's little brother on the Clones helped with donations and record?

Donating to your brothers school is different than donating to your sons school but your point still holds. You don't offer a kid b/c of who his dad is.

That's how I count it (off the top of my head).

I agree with the use of Eik's scholarship. If there's an impact guy for this year, go for it. Otherwise, maybe it doesn't hurt to hold on for a year or fire one off to Kelm (or whoever).

Assuming that CB is gone this year or after next, we will have 3 scholly's available next year (if we don't sign anyone next year)

Kadima opened one up
Eik has opened one up
CB will probably open one up

Carlos Boozer and MJ are entirely different stories. I don't completely disagree with your point, but do think that having a connection to Jordan could be beneficial in some intangible way. Whether or not it's worth a scholarship is another point.

As for Marcus, he played very well down the stretch for Whitney Young and, by some accounts, outperformed Colvin. He was a major contributor at a big time Illinois high school program and I guarantee he will be better in college than at least 1 person we offer a scholarship to in the future.

This is a stretch, but wasn't his dad known as being kind of a late bloomer with his basketball skills? And didn't his brother have to walk-on at Illinois before improving a lot over the course of this year? Of course, he's not going to be his dad, but maybe he's still got unrealized potential.

Michael Jordan being cut from his varsity team as a sophomore is by far the most overblown story ever IMO. Well maybe not ever!!

Call me crazy, but I just might jump on the Kavon Lytch wagon. He is BAMF from Brooklyn that has seen some success in JUCO. 17 points and 14 rebounds as a Frosh, transferred to Midland and averaged 17.7 ppg and 9.25 rpg. 6-6.5 240 lbs back breakin' machine! Only question I have is grades.

Use it on a Big 12 ready player. Bank it until you find one. You never know when you may need an extra one. Who cares if you dont use all the ships. They are filling them now and look what it has got them.

Am I the only one that think Marcus Jordan could be beneficial in ways not directly related to his production on the floor. Maybe I'm naive, but I would think that being the son of the best basketball player ever to play the game and still one of the most recognized figures on the entire planet might be helpful in some aspects (exposure, donations, recruiting, etc).

And let's be honest, it's not like he's a huge step down from either of the guys that just left. He'd be here for 4 years and has already been playing with a kid who I expect to be our starting PG the year after next. Also, wasn't his father a late bloomer?
You are so naive Marcus Jordan is a nice Illinois HS player but not D1 material! You sound so silly.

Not you again. Did you seriously take the time to go back and quote me from a different post from last week? Incredible.

I supposed you'd rather have Bubu than Jordan?

Last Brooklyn native/Rucker Park hero turned out pretty well for us

That he did!!!:yes::yes:

If this guy is the double-double machine he appears to be in juco, and could be even a solid contributor for us, I'd say let's do it.

I really liked two words that keep coming up regarding him: athleticism and toughness. That would fit the bill.

What have I complained about today? I said IF Hamilton and Boozer also leaves that would be horrible. Is that not true?

Some of you are like little girls. If somebody says something that isn't 100% positive, you call your moms and have them take you to the mall and out for ice cream! :jimlad:
I love your childish insults that show your true maturity. Welcome to my ignore list.

just to throw in my two cents here.... i sat on my computer and watched jordan play the semi state finals and not to be down on colvin or anything, but he was clearly the best player on the court that game.... athletic, strong, and great form on his shot and he's left handed... by the way the coaches had him playing point instead of colvin..... to me he's better than a mid major prospect and i think we'd be lucky to get him
I've watched him play several regular season games, and until the state finals, he was a ballhog that can't dribble, defend or shoot. I think he shot like 20% from three.

In theory I know for a fact he is giving money to Illinois. His son is not on a scholly at Illinois. Thus MJ has to give them money. How much is the real question.

There are better players out there than Marcus Jordan, but I would take him in a heartbeat. He has played with Colvin, which can't hurt chemistry, and could improve. He has the body of D-1 player. We just shouldn't expect all-world results.

Plus the two might not transfer after a year....
