We'll Be Back Better Than Ever

Didn't everyone think THIS would be an NIT year?

No. IIRC it was about 1/3 of posters for each of In, Bubble, and NIT. But that was BEFORE we picked up Kane. Which may not have been too far off... NIT or 9+ seed most likely if he'd gone elsewhere. Non-conference likely would have been fairly brutal and I bet Morris doesn't play nearly as well the last half of the season without going against and learning from Kane.

Morris will be a beast next year. He has already stated several times he holds back from being as aggressive of a scorer because he is not needed right now. Niang will be beast. Hogue will be beast. Long will shoot better and have a better handle I'm sure. I mean everyone is going to get better. Not to mention Nader and McKay coming in... I don't know how this team falls to the NIT next year. We're dancing again.

Easy to be excited when we know that on the majority of nights next year we will have the best overall player on the floor. It gets even more exciting to know that we could also have the best pg(MM), the best 3-point shooter(Naz) and the best finisher(Dustin) and we are not even mentioning the other guys. Can't wait!

Haven't ready whole thread but my $.02.

- I was thinking bubble last year until we added Kane and then I had us dancing.

- Next year I'm sticking with bubble team too and that can move up if we add a grad transfer guard or an experienced guard who can play right away because they get a waiver for whatever reason.

Just looked at McKay's and Hogue stats from Indian Hills; I knew McKay averaged something like 17 and 12 (actual: 17.8 and 10.5) while Hogue was more like 10 and 5 (real: 12.9 and 5.2) at Indian Hills. However I had thought that McKay played a lot more and was featured more, hence the difference in numbers.

Just looked and McKay averaged 23 mpg to Hogue's 20 mpg; not that big of a difference in minutes played. Scoring has a lot to do with how the offense is run, but rebounding not as much. Anyway, long winded way of saying I hope McKay's rebounding is twice as good as Hogue's next year!

Edit: Some of McKay's numbers are screwy; has him scoring 19 pts in 1 minute some games so perhaps the difference in PT was bigger than it appears.

I can never tell the difference between really good players and stars. Does anybody think Morris has Napier-like potential?

I hope you're right, but it's going to be tough to replace two All-Big 12/All-American-type seniors. I think we'll take a step back. Maybe more of an NIT year.

That's a lot more than a step back. ISU would have to lose a lot more than two players to drop to NIT status. IF they were also losing Niang and a role player then possible, but not just Kane and Ejim. They may drop a game or two back but not much more. Their returning players got enough time in the roles they'll be in next year for it not to be a complete overhaul.

There are still lots of roster changes to be made throughout the conference so it will be hard to tell what it looks like out there. If Embiid stays is a huge decider and if Turner ends up at either Kansas or Texas or Okie State or go out of the conference to SMU will go a long way to shaping what the top of the league looks like. Plus the transfer wire will shape several top teams late.

I fully expect ISU to contend for a Top 3 spot in the conference.

19 points in one minute????

We're winning it all baby!!!

I especially like that Georges, Hogue and Man Man talked about what they are going to improve in their games for next season. Now if they can just spread some of that enthusiasm to Matty, Daniel and Percy then we could be very special next year. Notice I said "we" like I am in the weight room lifting with the actual heavy lifters.
But my point is that setting specific goals (adding 15 lbs of muscle) this early is a very good sign for us fanatics.

You must be alluding to a Final Four bubble.

I am excited about next year because I think we are are going to be more skilled in the paint than any time in Fred's tenure with Niang, Hogue, Nadel and McKay. If we can add a big bodied JUCO or transfer that could put us over the top.

IMO the keys to next year are
- hogue developing a consistent 3 point shot; 37-40% with 120+ attempts
- Naz and Matt need to be high volume/high % 3 point shots; 40-45% w 180+ attempts
- We need a post defender who can guard the other teams big without needing the double team help
- After watching the Elite 8 our defense needs to improve greatly. We need to make the other team uncomfortable
- McKay and Nader need to fill the gaps. I don't think they need to replace Ejim and Kane- they need to pick up where the other guys can't.

Mckay is the real deal. Watched him a lot at hills. Only two time 1st team all american from a juco program that once won 3 straight national championships. He is what this years team lacked and what will take next years team to the next level...a true defensive threat on the inside
