We'll Be Back Better Than Ever

:twitcy:

Um, no. We're actually going to be better next year. McKay and Nader are that good. Plus we all know Morris, Long, Thomas, Hogue an Niang will all be better.

I hope you were kidding.

As of right now looking at who is likely leaving and coming into the Big 12, I think Niang is 1st team Big 12 and Morris is 2nd or 3rd team looking at how quickly he's improving and his sick skills in true point guard areas. Hogue is one of the best statistical returning Big 12 players, by just stats he's a top 15 returning player. Plenty of teams would kill to have a 3sus returning as well. This is without even getting into what new guys might give us. SO PUMPED!

I'm am very curious to see how Nader plays next year. One thing he far surpasses Mel in is ball handling. He's a good enough ball handler to run the point forward position. I think Nader will surprise some people next year.
Ha, not if they are on CF. It will be tough for him to live up to the expectations by some here. He does have a better handle than Ejim and I think you are correct that he will see some point-forward like White and Georges, but the latter two are probably better passers.

Depends who we get between now and then. Who we know will get significant minutes in likely order:
Morris
Niang
Hogue
Nader
Long
McKay
Thomas
Man, if we can get a guy like Lee and a another guard that can create, even the CCL could see season tickets.
Oh, and imo McKay's should be right after Hogue.

My main concern next year is replacing Kane, we need a guard who is physical, strong and aggressive to go with Morris. Also, we don't get McKay until late December. We will have played a lot of games by that point and some of them will be against good non conference teams. It is going to be hard to get resume building type of wins without some help on the front line. We need taller talent than just Hogue, Nader, and Niang. Those guys will be great, but against some teams we will have matchup problems without another taller big that is productive. That is why I hope we get Lee from Temple.

I agree. I think we can replace Ejim's production with a combination of Hogue, Niang, McKay, Nader, and possibly Lee.

I'm having a harder time figuring out how we replace Kane though. Morris will take another step forward, so that will help. Naz and Thomas just aren't Kane-type players IMO.... they are more just shooters. Not sure what Custer can provide as a true freshman yet either?

Here is where SDW has an opportunity for playing time IMO. I realize he's a LOT thinner than Kane, but if he can somehow develop a dribble drive game, he will see a lot of minutes IMO.

This is where I see a guy like Antoine Mason fitting in perfectly. He looks to be a big physical combo guard that is fearless and loves driving it to the rim, like Kane. Someone who can break down a defense and create for others.

If Fred can bring in Anthony Lee and Antoine Mason, I'd be THRILLED! I think that team would be more talented than this year's team IMO, and could go further too.

I hope you're right, but it's going to be tough to replace two All-Big 12/All-American-type seniors. I think we'll take a step back. Maybe more of an NIT year.

Dude are you joking? Next years team will contend for Big 12 title, period. Nader is a complete stud wait until you see him play. It will be the first time with CFH that ISU actually has a true frontcourt with DEPTH. Rebounding and Rim protecting will not be an issue. Every single year we lose the Big 12 NOY and about 70% of our scoring and people say there is no way we can be as good and every year people have been wrong. Now don't get me wrong replacing Kane more than anything really can't be done..however the development of MM cannot be understated. If CFH can bring in another Combo guard who can shoot the 3 look out.

Have to remember that this team excelled in close games and pulled a lot of them out at the wire.

That could mean a number of things, but it could mean that we could be better and have the same kind of year.
Great point. If '12-'13 pulled out close games like this one, they would have been Big 12 regular season champs.
It could mean it may not be as hard to be equal or better, as this team succeeded near the top of its potential, or that it will be hard to be as good next year unless we get similar toughness and fortune.

Speaking of fortune, the next time we get some good luck in the NCAA tournament will be a welcome change. Bad luck has easily cost us 2 or 3 wins under Hoiberg.

Other than his first year where it was obviously rebuilding time for Fred & Co., I do not expect anything less than tournament appearances every year under Hoiberg. We may not reload to the extent of a KU program, but we'll be back. I'll hold off from saying we'll be better - I have nothing on which to *accurately* predict that yet, but we'll be dancing again.

Don't I correctly recall someone inside the program, very early in the preseason, saying McKay had blocked more shots in one practice than the entire team did the year previously? Maybe I'm imagining things. . . .

Niang, Hogue, Edozie, and McKay, Nader . . . could the inside game maybe on paper look a little more intimidating than this year? Sure, DeAndre is the key loss. But Monte, the experience he got this year, wow. And the way Naz came along. And with hand-selected guys coming in, won't the coaches have a ton of talent to refashion in the way they seem to do every year, almost magically?

I can't imagine that next year's Cyclones will not be a tourney team. But, then, like every other human being on this earth when considering future events, I could be wrong.

Oh, my gosh! How could I not have mentioned Matt Thomas?!

Everyone always talking about Fred's NBA style of play. NBA teams all have lots of guys with McKay's length and hops, we haven't yet. That has to be exciting.

The biggest thing that they will lose next year is Kane's rebounding. The way CFH coaches offense will not be a problem, and everyone should already know that. That being said rebounding by a PG shouldn't be that big of deal since we will be adding more size to the lineup with Mckay. If Lee ends up coming we will have plenty of size and rebounding to make up for the loss of Kane.

I know Ejim has meant a lot to this cyclone team for 4 years now, but Nader is a better offensive player and just as good on the defensive side. It sounds like blasphemy, but we might improve at that position. The only thing will be if he can be as consistent as Ejim has been.

This is an excellent point. This team's main asset was it's grittiness and toughness. A big portion of that was from Kane and Mel. Who knows if chemistry changes, or the ball simply bounces the wrong way next year and the close ones go the other way.

Only if going by having more "wow" plays. He has a long ways to go to reach Ejim's efficient production, and he has never been as good on defense as Ejim, despite his wing-span.

We will only get swagbergier with Fred at the helm.

That is optimistic. Nader will need to improve just to reach Ejim's level.

We will miss Kane as a mismatch and his intangibles. Being able to post-up your pg and having your pg be good for a double-double any night changes the game.
I've been going off what is said on here and the prevailing thing is he has a good outside shot.

Dude, shut up! We return 3 out of our 5 starters and add two (maybe three) big men. Our young guards will be amazing next year and we are balls deep at the forward position. Why would we go from a 3 seed to an NIT team? Go cheer for the Hawkeyes. Last part: we have Fred so we will win. I expect us to finish in the top of the Big 12, maybe even win the regular season. ISU will continue their upward trend next year.
