Why wouldnt they call it the antarctic ocean if we already have the arctic?

That would be too logical.

The Southern Ocean is mostly outside of the Antarctic Circle, while the Arctic Ocean is within. Just my guess

The southern ocean has been around since I was at least in middle school.

Well, technically I think it has been around a bit longer than that but it might have been named within the last 50 years.

When I initially saw the title I thought of Sargasso Sea and thought California had really gone nutso.
