WBB: General All-NCAA Thread - Not Team Cyclones Stuff

Guess this is last weeks news but just saw an old FB post noting that Iowa seniors Kate Martin & Gabbie Marshall are coming back for a 5th year. Big deal for Hawks.

surprised Warnock isn't joining them

Not everyone wants to play five years although Martin will be working on a masters for sure, it will be her 6th year. She redshirted like Morgan Kane did. I am surprised sometimes at the ones that do take the COVID year. Scott and Johnson passed on it. Joens has been our only one although I guess everyone expects our two junior guards to play a 5th in 2024.

Hawks will be sort of full rostered and will be carrying Ava Jones, their 2023 forward who was so badly injured in the car accident, who is unlikely to ever play again. They might actually need some others to transfer, seems they won't even be able to grab a portal player.

Warnock is going to dental school.
Martin is already in her master's so one more scholarship year will hopefully be enough for her to finish it.
Not sure on Marshall's academic plans.

Do not believe that Ava Jones counts against their scholarship limit - think there is a rule that if you are medically unable to ever play that they can pay for your school but not count against the scholarship limit. If Bea had another year and she had medically retired think it would be the same situation.

She will be attending dental school and chose to focus on that instead of basketball.

Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall will return next year to use their extra COVID year of eligibility, while Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said McKenna Warnock will decline hers and move on to dental school after this campaign ends.

I guess Caitlin Clark said on a radio show Monday, she is considering taking her COVID year and coming back for year # 5.

Would certainly be in the cards for her to seriously consider it. The WNBA doesn't pay for crap compared to her possible endorsement deals which she can now do as a collegiate. I guess she gets more media PR, and market value for companies, in the NCAA than in the WNBA. For sure she is on TV more at Iowa than if she was playing for the Minnesota Lynx or other WNBA team.

Ava Jones will count against the limit unless she officially medically retires, AKA forfeits the idea of ever playing again. She has not done that. It may or may not happen at some point, but for now, everyone supports her trying to make a comeback.

But didnt Iowa have a football player retire, then transfer and play elsewhere?

Yeah, that was my understanding and why I counted her. I am skeptical she will ever play, maybe a token minute at some point, but there is no mistaking that she wants to try and that Iowa is honoring that. With her injures it's remarkable that she's even able to enroll and attend as a student. That accident was lifechanging for her whole family. I hate even thinking about it, it's just disturbing.

Ordinarily 15 WBB scholarships is more than most teams use but the COVID extra is having that come into play more for the next couple of years. After that it's more back to normal although you will still have the transfers complicating things each year.

Thanks for the clarification - I had not followed closely and the severity of the injuries at the time of the accident I thought definitely career ending. Good for her to keep fighting and keeping her dream alive.
