Defenseless Player: Contact to Head or Neck Area
ARTICLE 4
No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul. (See Points of Emphasis for a description of “Defenseless Player.â€￾)

You can decide for yourself if a QB standing still in front of a 200 lb safety running full speed is defenseless.

I believe in the same rule it has several instances of when a player should be considered "defenseless" and the only time it mentions a QB is after he has handed off the ball or after he has thrown a pass, I don't know how you can consider a QB, who still has the ball, defenseless.

That's only because the KU guy didn't drop his head like the Muzzu QB did, our guy is leading with his head way worse on this play than the Nebraska player was on Saturday.

There is a huge difference between any kind of helmet to helmet hit and spearing. Hell, if you watch that play you see the KU guy hit his own blocker helmet to helmet. Do you think that should be a penalty too?

#1) he probably could be called for spearing.
#2) a penalty for hitting your own player? Only a Nebraska fan . . .

A QB that, if you don't get a good hit on, might be fully capable of getting off the pass or running with the ball. I don't know what CycloneWanderer wanted him to do, tap the QB on the shoulder and say "You're out"?

I can promise you that our coaches aren't telling Sims to not go for the big hit if he blitzes untouched into Martinez's blindside.

Dirty hits are bad and should be penalized. Hard, clean hits are part of the game.

How about just a good clean tackle? I already gave you a video showing proper tackling technique as well as an example of a clean tackle by a defensive back on a quarterback standing still. I am beginning to understand why people think Huskers are stupid.

Really, because what I saw was the QB taking a step forward just before he got hit, causing the defensive back to almost miss and make an arm tackle rather than hit him straight on. Because Quarterbacks are allowed to move when they are in the pocket, and some of them even make quite the name for themselves with their agility and ability to brush off tacklers.

\I'm trying to think if we might have any examples of mobile quarterbacks in any upcoming games...

If there is any doubt by a Big12 official, they should throw the flag on NU. We got hosed by the officals in 2006 when NU played here. They owe us!

You're on crack if you think that hit by Osborn was clean. That was a viscous helmet to helmet hit that should have drawn a penalty. I would say the same thing if a Cyclone player hit Gabbert like that.

For all the Huskers out there, how would you like David Simms to rock Taylor Martinez like that this Saturday? I'm guessing that if the exact same play occurred, Nebreska fans would be out of their seats screaming bloody murder!

If you honestly think that was a legal hit then you are inviting your own players to take similar beatings. It works both ways.

I was referring to the following video in which the ISU player hit the KU player in the chest, there was no helmet to helmet contact and no foul:

Brandon Hunley should have been flagged for that hit. It wasn't helmet to helmet, but he was clearly spearing with his head. Definite penalty. I would never defend such a hit.

What is disconcerting to me is the number of Nebraska fans on here defending the play Osborn made on Gabbert. Who knows if Osborn was actually trying to hurt him, but he was playing recklessly and could have given Gabbert a major concussion. If you think that is cool than you are a jerk wad.

When the OP started this thread I laughed at how ridiculous it sounded. But the more I hear Cornhusker fans talk about this play the more I'm starting to wonder if they at least want to see players injured.

NOT illegal, Here is a frame by frame illustration of how far Gabbert drops from the time Osborne starts his tackle to when he hits him. See Gabbert's legs spread to duck, see how far his head drops while Osborne stays even on his line to Gabbert.
You want to continue to say it is illegal then you lose all credibility in any further or prior responses.

Gabbert is looking straight at him, he starts to duck... how do you call this anything but? He is pulling the ball down, he drops his body's profile to absorb a hit, he isn't defenseless. Osborne cannot be expected to make his adjustment to avoid it when he is going for Gabbert's chest. WHY wasn't it called? Because Gabbert makes an effort to move out of the way and absorb the hit. He isn't defenseless at that point which is the point of the rule. He isn't targeting at the shoulder or higher... if he DID target there Gabbert's head would have ended up in Osborne's belly. As it is, Gabbert lowers himself into the hit and actually CAUSES the helmets to hit.

This is why the Big 12 will do nothing about it.

Dude, you got WAY too much time on your hands - pulling in freeze frames with arrows and the whole bit. You must not have much going on in your life.

Should have been flagged, don't think it's a suspension type play though.

I don't know. At first I thought it deserved a flag for helmet to helmet with no suspensino. After looking at the frame by frame he lowered his head before impact and deserves a suspension.
