Was the officiating really that bad?

and the announcers are wrong sometimes too ... it wasn't an over and back. NCAA Rule 4.8
so there ... if that actually was a travel - ISU is +1 with the officials.
Officiating is somewhat subjective, but they're a lot better than some people give them credit for. Drake beat us down in the last 10 mins. Drake, not the officials.
That's why I would have called traveling. They should have at worst called a non-shooting foul. So what do they call...

They called it very tight in the 2nd half, and the guys we were relying on were affected. Sure, I had my moments where I was convinced that all three refs graduated from Drake. That doesn't mean the refs took this one away.
It's like everything else in sports or life. Things happen that don't work to your advantage. We had guys in foul trouble, and our players didn't adjust well enough to win. Should've won, had the opportunity, but we didn't overcome things when they happened.

Ref John Higgins has always called bad games against Iowa State. When he calls our games I just get used to badly officiated games.

The rest of us realize the refs are as much a part of the game as the players and coaches. To expect perfection out of them, but forgive Brackins for missing a free-throw that would have tied the game in the final seconds is ludicrous.
Officiating wouldn't enter into my top 5 list for reasons we lost this game.
At least 2 horrible calls that really hurt. Wes didn't foul on the break-away at all. Not even close. AT guarded one of their big men, stuffed him at the rim, 2 shot foul. No foul there. Petey had a block on their guard which should have been no foul. Hartzell waiting to see if Young's shot went in right by McD. When it didn't, foul call. Those are just off the top of my head. The refs really let Drake play for a bit, while calling everything on ISU, hence the Bronx cheer that finally went up when there finally was a call against Drake.
We didn't deserve to win the game, but the officiating was poor, especially in the second half. They called just enough to keep the game within reach, and also to keep the ISU offense from getting in rhythm.

The call after Josh Young's 3 point attempt in the first half appeared to be pretty bad, but I didn't get to see a replay of it on the board. That was the second time he fell down after a 3 point attempt, that time he finally got the call he was looking for.
I didn't understand the one on the block by AT either. Nor the one on Eik. nor the wait for the call on Young's three.
Remember that TV replay angles and the refs' angles aren't usually the same. Nor are in-person angles and the refs'.
After watching the replay on Elk's foul yes there was no contact. But Elk needs to just give them the basket and not stick his hand out. I see that all of the time where a guy doesn't want to give the uncontested layup but doesn't want to stop the guy from scoring. You're going to get called for it anyway, go hack him hard or get out of the way so you don't get called.
To me overall the officiating was good. If we got the ball inside then maybe we'd get to the line. The only thing that I saw was I thought Mac called the timeout at the end well before the ball got out of Peterson's hands. But just like most calls it was a pretty quick play.
Eikmeier did reach in, wheteher he made contact or not, i'm not sure. but we all know that sometimes fouls are called even if no contact is made. Next time he needs to either just give up the basket or hammer him so he cant get the shot off.
That is a confusing point and I'm actually going to go against the officials if the DVR is showing no contact.
A lot of times fans/coaches/players will ask for the "reach" to be called. There's nothing wrong with reaching you arm out, but it has come to be slang for "contact foul occuring while reaching in for the ball". Its just a lot easier to say "reaching" or "reaching-in".
However, while you watch that slow-mo play (I haven't) check to see that there was no body contact whatsoever. I lot of time the focus is on the arm, when body contact is just as legitimate.
Worst call in sports. Refs always call a foul on that one, or at least 90% of the time they do, no matter if there is contact or not. Even if they are trailing the play and have absolutely no idea if there was contact. Foul.
Yeah, the call on Eik looked poor, but Eik was in front of the guy and the ref was trailing on the play. Hard to actually see anything. He assumed contact was made without actually seeing it - because his view was blocked. Not a horrible assumption as often times there is conact on those plays - but it looked to be a wrong assumption.

The reffing was bad. Is that why we lost? No. Imo, we lost because as soon as we had a 10 point, our offensive plan was stand at the "E" for about 20 seconds and chuck up a bad shot. That being said, our guys stopped playing defense for fear of getting called. Basically, it looked like if we contested anything Drake did inside, a foul was called, and on the other end we were getting mugged and no fouls were called. The foul in Eik was a heaping pile of BS. He was running away from the guy for crying out loud.
