I was wondering how hard it was to walk on at iowa state or any othe d1 programs. I was talking to a guy who graduated from my high school last year and he said he is going to try to walk on at isu. I kind of laughed at him but then i thought maybe he would have a chance. Has anyone on hear ever walked on at a program or know how hard it is?

Bret Culbertson did it. But if your friend is not a kicker, he has very little chance unless he has been in contact with the coaching staff and they have invited or at least encouraged him to walk on.
isufbcurt(?) was either a walkon or knows a good deal about what you have to do to walk on. send him a BM.

It is easier to walk on during the winter, go thru winter conditioning and spring ball. It is not that hard if you are willing to play on the scout team and really want to play football. You may not be able to go through 2 a days if you are not in the top 105 players. But you can rejoin the team after 2 a days are over.
yeah i tried it in the fall (07) and they only took about 2 people. one was the guy i worked out with and the coach didnt seem to like, but he was like 6'3 and 265. darn my short/slowness.
It is very difficult to get a spot as a walk on. One of my friends tried to walk on in 2001 and 2002 and both years they took 2 people. He is 5'8" and was 180, ran a 4.7 40, and had decent quickness. He was basically told that they would have taken him if he was over 6'0" and had the same skills. It also helps to have prior contact with the coaches or to know a couple of football players that can put a good word in for you.
He will probably only tell you about how much he loves Dan McCarney.
I think we've been through enough coaching changes that it would be impossible to make this decision based on previous players attempts to walk on.

I walked on in 96-97 and unless you are willing to spend time on the scout team and taking punishment from the 1st and 2nd team squads, then I would say don't do it. Now, if you really love football and are willing to take a beating day in and day out, then go for it!

Tank that is exactly right. If you have the itch to play more football and even think you might be good enough don't let the opportunity pass you by you will regret it for a long time. I was laughed at and told by almost everyone I was wasting my time, that I wouldn't even be considered, I almost listened. Other than my wife and kids it was one of the most rewarding things I ever did(that could just be because I am a very boring guy).
