VOTE: Brock Purdy ESPY Nominee

Not taking anything away from caitlin clark- but how is she a breakthrough athlete? Same for Angel Reese.

They were 2 of the most prolific people going into the season. It's not like what they did was an anomaly.
She's not. But ESPN needs other names to go up against Brock.

Clark also gets the alphabetical bump by being first on the list.

Awesome being nominated for Brock, but lets be honest, as cool of a story as it was he won't win going up against Reese or Clark.

Disagree. As someone else mentioned, Clark didn't breakthrough imo. She started the year as the favorite to be POY - Brock started the year as what, 3rd string?

Short of not getting hurt and missing out on a potential Super Bowl, I don't know what else Brock could have done to "breakthrough".
He's already arguably the best last pick in the NFL ever.

Some of the mentioned achievements on the Mr. Irrelevant wiki page -
  • First Mr. Irrelevant to complete a forward pass in a regular season game
  • First Mr. Irrelevant to ever throw a touchdown pass in a regular season game
  • First Mr. Irrelevant quarterback to score a rushing touchdown
  • First Mr. Irrelevant QB to feature in, as well as start and win a playoff game
  • First Mr. Irrelevant QB to make it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs
Maybe my definition of breakthrough is different, but comparing Brock to a run-of-the-mill baseball rookie of the year and a couple women's basketball players that came into the year on preseason accolades lists seems like an easy vote for Purdy.

Yeah well, what else could Troy Davis could have done to win the Heisman??

I think Brock is very deserving and should win, I just can see it being a popularity contest just like any other award and he gets slighted. This type of stuff happens all of the time.

I don't think there's any denying her stardom went to whole different level. She was obviously well known around here, well known if you followed women's CBB, and probably somewhat known to your average MBB fan. But she's an absolute household name now.

But she wasn't a "breakthrough" performer.

She was a unanimous first team all american during the pre-season lol.

Yah, I guess it gets into the definition of the award. If you look at breakthrough in terms of coming as a complete surprise, then it would definitely be Brock. But even though Caitlin has been exceptional for a few years now, doing it on such a big stage could be considered a "breakthrough".

I'd also note this is more time than I ever thought I'd spend dissecting the meaning behind an ESPY category.

Haha!

Well if by breakthrough they mean "popularity" then yeah, she'd take the cake here no doubt.. and still could but I don't see her winning 2 ESPYs.

She should win the best college womans athlete category

I don’t know, wearing my ISU gear around LA this year I still get asked “what school is that” but if I say “it’s Brock Purdy’s school” everyone’s eyes light up with recognition of him.

I think people in Iowa may not have a good frame of reference because it’s majority Hawkeye. I’d bet my life Brock Purdy has higher name recognition outside the state.
