Veishea Problems? Welch?

Was out til about 2 AM, but didn't notice anything where I was. Didn't quite make it to Welch though.

Good luck with your lawsuit.

I don't know whats more sad. The fact that you think you have a case or the fact that you don't realize that even if YOU win it will be YOU(the taxpayer) that pays your settlement.

Maybe you should be mad at all the idiots that choose to act like neanderthals when they get a little alcohol in them.

Wake up students. Want to be treated like adults? Start acting like adults.
Thanks, Dr. Phil.

Probably happened between 1 and 2...Watched a girl get maced in the face for no reason...She wasn't doing anything wrong(not even walking towards Welch). Cop basically ran up to her....BS if you ask me.

Another interesting thing.. des moines register says 6 arrests on their homepage. 6? 6 arrests is enough reason to close welch down, mace people, split up groups of friends, and end veishea on a low note? Seems like an overuse of force to me. There were TONS of cops in the area, blocking off every street that led to welch. Dont tell me they couldnt have isolated the offenders, and quickly nipped the problem.

And only 6 arrests... that seems like a normal weekend night in any college town.
There's more arrests than that on a normal weekend isn't there?

Nothing compared to the 70's and 80's. Back then the Fraternities had huge keg parties.

But we didn't have riots and mace and nearly as much stupidity on public display back then.

I haven't read near all this thread.

But on what authority does the Ames PD have to come in an close down businesses?

If I were the owners - the phone lines to City Hall would be burning up today. In fact, several council members would've been woke up that night.

ames police department is messed up,I was at a party friday during the day outside in a buddies front yard.. two cops stopped by and talked to us and were real cool, said they didn't have a problem with the party and handed out shirts. Not even an hour later, two younger guy cops stopped by, ticketed people for public intox cuz they stepped on the sidewalk and arrested one kid for who knows what. It seriously was the biggest crock i've ever seen, everyone was just having a good time and the two young cops broke it up just to get a chubby out of it. If i was a betting man I'd guess these two young cops were probably the ones trigger happy with the pepper spray

+1

Someone explain to me how a couple fights made the cops feel the need to close down Welch - and how they have the authority to do that in the first place.

Yep-

I can see the authority and even the NEED to keep the street area clear and moving. And if they want to ticket and/or arrest for public intox, etc. - well I guess that's in their power.

But not businesses. Hell, the sub shops probably stocked up figuring on a huge rush of business this past weekend.

I'm being totally honest here... 1:30-3AM on Veishea weekend is probably the busiest couple of hours in the entire year for JJ, Subway and Pita Pit. Was there anything in the Daily about this?

What the hell is Tyease Thompson still doing here, still getting in trouble I see.

He's a consistent member of the Story County Current Inmate Roster once a month or so I see his name pop-up and Berryman, but Berryman has cooled down for a couple months.

As I bystander of several UNI Homecoming riots and one Veisha riot, there is some stupidity in riot control.

The worst UNI riot involved several of us trying to leave the Hill only being pushed backed into the mob, even the side streets were closed by riot police. I had to stop several people from lighting the toppled cars on fire , but couldn't stop them from shoving the cars into the business' display windows.

Pushing the mob down the street caused the Kum & Go to get demolished. We finally had to walk 3 blocks down to get off the Hill and even then more riot police were rushing down the side streets...seemed silly to me when half the people were just trying to leave.

Stepping on sidewalk with alcohol container is breaking the law. They ticketed who violated the law.... I am sure it was more than "they were just having good time".

We were at Welch Ave. Station and my friend went outside to smoke. He said he got pushed down by a cop and told to ******* leave or he's going to jail. It's sad that I think he's lucky he didn't get sprayed, because he didn't deserve any of that ****.

I think they did a **** poor job of informing people of the situation, and just pushing/spraying people. Especially considering there were no real significant problems.

No.
I have seen numerous occasions where a cop will give a ticket to somebody who is just relaxing with friends and having a good time and the cop will tell them to "do something" and will be given a ticket for doing it. Some police just like to go on power trips and try to be as tough as possible. Some of them were probably picked on when they were younger and feel the need to get back at those who seem arrogant.
Giving stupid tickets out for such things like standing on a sidewalk with a beer is part of the reason behaviors escalate to more angry. During VEISHEA, there is no reason to give out tix to people standing on a sidewalk with a beer, if they are at a house party having a good time and not causing any trouble. All that does is **** people off. If I were a cop I would just maybe tell them to get back on the grass and have a good time. No reason at all to go on a power trip and start busting people for a reason like that.
end rant.
