Veishea Problems? Welch?

Edit: The cops are gonna pay tomorrow. Lawsuit coming your way Ames police.
Good luck with your lawsuit.

I don't know whats more sad. The fact that you think you have a case or the fact that you don't realize that even if YOU win it will be YOU(the taxpayer) that pays your settlement.

Maybe you should be mad at all the idiots that choose to act like neanderthals when they get a little alcohol in them.

Wake up students. Want to be treated like adults? Start acting like adults.

IMO, what occurred last night was extremely minor and barely newsworthy. Things like this will happen and moving the concerts to Timbuktu isn't making it better.

I was back up in ames for veishea this weekend.. my freshman year was the year of the last riot.

Im not sure the cops did anything to prevent a riot. Quite the opposite, it seemed like they were being openly antagonistic to the crowds, 99.9% of whom were just out to have a good time, and not harm anything or anyone. Now, I'm not one to be dumb and pick a fight with them, even if they were being ridiculous, I know I'm not gonna win that fight, but they definitely were not helping the situation last night. In addition, shutting down welch had to cost some of those food stands (that pull in a ton of business between 1:30 and 3 am) a ton of money. I know i probably wouldve hit up the superdog stand...

I heard of several people being threatened with mace who were not doing anything but following directions. WAS was locked down (nobody in or out) for a time around 1 when there was no violence to be seen anywhere on the streets.

It seemed like they had learned when they completely adjusted their approach for the 2006 veishea, but when I was out last night, the actions of the police reminded me of 04, so i guess theyve forgotten all that.

The thing is, while there are some good sized crowds, its no more than say, the iowa game weekend, and theres never been any problems there (when in all likelihood there should be more fights breaking out with the rivalry). The only difference is that the cops dont show up loaded for a fight on football game weekends. If the cops would just chill out like they normally do every other saturday, veishea would not escalate into a problem.

The ONE good thing the cops did was get cyride to send some more buses over, the crowd that was beginning to build when they cleared welch could easily have turned violent, the buses allowed them a quick way to get home (especially since cyride was ringing busy due to the huge volume of calls that happened when they closed down welch)

No, its not. I thought the reason they moved the concerts from welch to central campus was to keep people occupied there. When concerts are way out there (and dont get me started on the wristband thing), less people will go, and the bar area will be more packed. Veishea 2010 should have the main stage back on central campus.

If they can produce evidence that they were maced without due cause, then yes, they would have a case. Mace isnt a toy, its a weapon, and should be treated as such.

And sure, itll cost all taxpayers. But thats not the victim's fault, if they were proven right then it should put more pressure from the taxpayers on the police to get their act together and weed out those cops who enjoy antagonizing students, and those who treat their weapons like theyre toys. You dont just wave around a gun, and neither should you for mace.

The cops are victims of the mob mentality...

Everybody seems to be "victim" anymore.

I assisted with VEISHEA security this weekend (late at night) and I saw up close what was going on. I must say that the behavior of the vast majority of the people there was excellent. But there are a very small minority of people who aren't mature enough to hold their liquor and they have to ruin it for everyone. And I'm pretty confident that many, if not most, of this small group of people aren't ISU students. (Notice that the guy who jumped from the 4th floor balcony was an Iowa Central CC student.)

In my opinion, those of you who badmouth the Ames and ISU police couldn't be more wrong. They want very much for VEISHEA to be successful and they try very hard to let the little stuff go in order to keep things going as smoothly as possible. But when some idiots do things so blatant that they endanger themselves and others, the local police have no choice but to step in.

Instead of *****ing about the police, you should be *****ing about the drunk idiots who are determined to ruin VEISHEA.

I highly doubt this will happen. The university has made it very clear that they don't want any large concerts on central campus in case it does rain that would turn the place into a mud pit.

That's the problem. Not so sure they shouldn't cancel the event.
That'd be beyond stupid for the university. Gets people in Ames spending money in places like the Bookstore for no real reason. VEISHEA is paid for through tuition if I'm not mistaken so that's free money for them.

Ding ding ding!!! Winner!

One murder or death that throws the University into a law suit will wipe any "profit" away.

The event was started to promote the University. Stupid things like what happened last night just hurt it instead.

So because of the actions of a couple morons, we have to quit the whole event. Get rid of football games and tailgating, because the same stupid crap goes on.

Another interesting thing.. des moines register says 6 arrests on their homepage. 6? 6 arrests is enough reason to close welch down, mace people, split up groups of friends, and end veishea on a low note? Seems like an overuse of force to me. There were TONS of cops in the area, blocking off every street that led to welch. Dont tell me they couldnt have isolated the offenders, and quickly nipped the problem.

And only 6 arrests... that seems like a normal weekend night in any college town.

Maybe they should just get rid of weekends as well, since that crap can go on then too.
