Veishea Problems? Welch?

Disagree, the drunks usually turn stuff into bigger then what it is. Sometimes, sure cops can be the problem, but the ones whos mind are impaired usually is the deciding factor.

I have to agree with both of you. Drunks to cause problems (i.e. iowa city) however overly aggressive cops can cause the situation to get out of control very quickly. I don't see where macing someone when they ask for directions fits into "To serve and protect"

Yes, I do agree with that. I thought the cops did very well this weekend, I wasn't near welch when that incident happend, probably was a mix of both situations, aggressive, and paranoid cops, and drunken idiots. Most of the times, IMO its the drunken idiots that cause the problems though.

I was around during the 80's when we had the riots. Part of the problem then was the cops did not act fast enough and problems got out of hand.

These guys are trained in mob control which is a science in itself. Do some of you really think you know more than they do?

Obviously everyone on here thinks they know more then everyone else. :jimlad::wideeyed:

We walked down Welch sometime between 1 and 1:30 and that's when the fights were happening at Kum & Go. There was a lot of people in that parking lot. The cops were arresting people and handcuffing them to chairs in the fire station. We were on the opposite corner when we saw them spraying stuff and we got the hell out of there.

Anybody hear about anything happening out by the horse barns/agronomy building around 1:30-2:00? I saw a bunch of flashing lights down that way and looked like they were diverting traffic away when I was walking home. I was tempted to go take a closer look, but common sense prevailed.

It's probably just drunk people. I saw a lot of people getting stopped by cops checking IDs and such around this time when I went to get a late-night funnel cake.

“All of the well-meaning people become part of the problem because the troublemakers hide amongst them,â€￾ he said. “The troublemakers find safety in numbers and that’s what onlookers are providing.â€￾

"SO WE JUST MACE EVERYBODY!!"

The cops freaking hate VEISHEA, they would absolutely love another full blown riot so they could stick a fork in the tradition all together. I don't see why a couple fights required shutting down Welch. Are they telling us they can't handle a disturbance without shutting down every business on an entire street? If I was the owner of Subway or Jimmy Johns I'd be pissed. The cops cost them a LOT of business last night if they forced them to close at 1:30!

Iowa State has really turned into a drinking/party school, I love to drink as much as the next guy or gal, but man, just insane the amount of drunken craziness I saw, nothing riot-esque, but still crazy on it's own level. But heck - it's Ames, IA what else is there to do then drink?

I think all in all I heard 50 arrests and 1 reported injury (someone jumped out a 4 story building/legacy towers i think? just wow)

Nothing compared to the 70's and 80's. Back then the Fraternities had huge keg parties.

Can you please explain the thought process you go through to make this sound like a good idea?

Name released of man who fell out of Legacy Towers

OH, If I COULD, I'd be making a lot of money somewhere as a psychologist. I'd love to hear anyone's explanation of how the thought process on that goes? I've been extremely hammered before but never understand when I hear the outrageous stories about people like this. I am assuming he had to be drunk at the time. I'd be surprised if he wasn't. I just never understood how the same alcohol I drink makes others do these things.

Did the Cops learn anything from the massive 1988 and 1992 riots. It sounds like the same thing 20 years ago.

The Riots started when the cops busted up (3) Huge parties. There were 1000's of 1/2 drunk college kids looking for something to do.

Sure they did. This didn't turn into a massive riot.
