Hey guys, just got kicked off Welch at aroudn 1:45. Cops had shut down Jimmie Johns when I left the bars. We walked down and subway was open, went in and ordered a sandwhich and mid-making of the 'which' cop bursts into subway yelling that this is the last sub they are goign to make and ordered everyone out. Cops continued to push people off welch as we left after getting our finished sub. Heard rumors of macing going on.

NOT TRYING TO START A RIOT AT ALL, just looking for information. Cops having been pretty cool as of late but something must have set them off right now for them to completely shut down welch before bar close.

Dan

I don't know what was going on, but we left the bars at around 1:30 and they wouldn't let us go towards Welch.

This was the first time I've been around Welch on VEISHA, and I gotta, say, I finally understood how riots could start. The area i absolutely packed with drunk people. I could tell a lot of people were getting pissed off waiting in lines to get into bars and to bye alcohol. Basically, when there are THAT many people getting really drunk in one area, something is going to happen, its only a matter of how severe.

Well, back when I was in school the riot started when they pushed all the people at house parties on Hunt onto Welch. I came out of Lumpy's and walked right into the middle of a riot on my way home. We tried to ask the cops how we could get home and they sprayed us with pepper spray. Hopefully things don't turn out like that night tonight.

5 of my friends got maced outside Kum and Go for no reason. They didn't even give them a warning and just started spraying for no reason. My one friend came walking back to our house on Welch Ave. and looked like he was straight out of Band of Brothers. He couldn't see and had his hands out in front of him like a freaking zombie. 2 hours later he is still red as a beat.

Oh yeah, never mind the massive fight that took place at our house at 5 o'clock.

Edit: The cops are gonna pay tomorrow. Lawsuit coming your way Ames police.

Couldn't help noticing you used the word "we" in your posting. The late-night alcohol-induced group-think mentality is dangerous. In those situations, it seems like the total IQ of the group goes down as people are added to the group, like total resistance in a circuit of resistors in parallel. (Any EE students? They know what I'm talking about) When I was at ISU in the early 90s, I witness groups of people doing stupid things that no individual would be caught dead doing, day or night.

Good point. People start to justify their behavior to one another, sensibility goes down. Yeah, you made a really good point here.

On the plus side, whatever was going on didn't make the news, so the old full-scale rioting didn't happen this year.

I got some burns on my arm from the mace lingering in the air in front of Kum and Go. We walked by shortly after the cops had maced those kids. Thankfully no riot ever happened, but it was the most aggressive they've been in a while...

Good luck with that, its your word against theirs basically. Back when they had the last riot people filed complaints as well and the Police came out squeeky clean after the so called "3rd party investigation" on how they handled the situation.

Anyone watch those "craziest police video" shows? They showed one at a college campus where they have an annual celebration much like VEISHA.....they show the video of the year before, where cops in riot gear are kicking students around, students are setting things on fire, etc. etc.

Then they show a video of the following year, where they decided to remove everything from the town square that could be thrown or lit on fire (mailboxes, street signs, dumpsters), and the city told the cops to stay out of the area completely. The video shows nothing but peace.

Moral of the story? It seems like the cops cause more problems than they're worth at times.

If it's true, Kum and Go has security cameras.

This is right on the money. Most times I've seen officers try to break up something big, it turned into something bigger and made the situation even more dangerous.

Disagree, the drunks usually turn stuff into bigger then what it is. Sometimes, sure cops can be the problem, but the ones whos mind are impaired usually is the deciding factor.
