Various Thoughts on ISU Wrestling

Hey everyone - I have several different thoughts and opinions about various wrestlers and situations and I'm being lazy and just combining them all into one post/thread.

Some people may hate my 'know-it-all' demeanor in posts (sorry about that) but I also am more than willing to admit when my takes were bad. I'm really starting to change my mind on Colbray. I have been very impressed with him over the past few weeks. His demeanor in matches now compared to the first half of the year is night and day different. I give a lot of credit to our staff for that but it also takes Sam to buy in. The fact that he is pushing the pace and getting stall calls against his opponents is great. He has won a couple matches in the past week in OT by doing this. He is competing with top talent so much better now too. He has the talent to be great. He needs a lot of work on his mat wrestling but his athleticism is there. You can tell listening to Kyven how much he likes Sam and how great he thinks he can be. Having Kyven in the program is so huge. I am really excited to see how he progresses to his sophomore season. If this trend continues it will be huge to solidify that weight class and fill needs elsewhere.

Now that I have starting tasting some crow, I would like to toot my own horn :) - Some have been pretty skeptical this year about Parker, but I have always been very high on him. I thought his style was going to be college friendly and also match very well with this staff. I also thought he was hurting himself more being at 133. His wins this weekend were super impressive. He has by far the best wins of the season on the team. 141 seems to be a great fit for him and I'm excited to see him continue to grow over the next 3 years with this staff!

Speaking of 141 - let's talk about this Storr situation. I wasn't totally surprised to see him want to transfer, but still somewhat surprised..I was however shocked to see it at this time of the year. The reports that are coming out are not surprising if you are an avid ISU wrestling follower or somewhat connected to the program. I knew that the Paulsons were really close with Storr and talked to him but I am really disappointed that they were actively recruiting him this season. I never thought a ton about the Paulsons but this is pathetic on their end and I hope they have some serious ramifications on their end. I also don't totally understand the free pass that Storr seems to be getting from fans. I think it is pretty crappy on his part too. At the end of the day - I have always thought that Parker could have as good of a career as Storr (especially with our current staff) and with his recent results and the fact we now have better lineup spacing - along with having scholly money to spend on other big needs..this could be a win-win for all (except the Paulsons..screw them).

I know he hasn't shown much over the last two years (redshirt/injury reasons) but I am a little bullish on Mackall at 125. Kid is relentless, has heavy hands and is much more of a college folkstyle kid versus a freestyle kid. I view him very similar to Parker and think he is in a great spot with a perfect coaching staff to match his style/demeanor. He generates a huge point swing in duals next year for us.

We need a 165 transfer in the worst way. I would love for us to get Dayton Racer. I have heard he is kind of a handful but he does have a ton of talent and has a relationship obviously with our staff (I dont know if that is a good or bad relationship though). He is ranked #1 at 165 and was a JUCO national champ last year. He signed with tOSU this summer but ultimately went back to JUCO instead. I dont know the story there. He would be the perfect bridge gap for the next two years until Foca is ready to step in as a redshirt freshman.

Lastly - it looks like Brent is getting much more comfortable in his coaching role. It is fun watching him in the coaches corner. I hope we can keep him around for a long time.

Great info. I don't know a lot about wrestling, but I feel like I learned a bunch just now. One question: What does it mean when a wrestler has 'heavy hands' and how is it an advantage?

Good post. I may also need to eat crow on Colbray. I'm not willing to do it yet, but things do appear to be turning around for him. I'm a lot more hopeful now than I was a month ago.

Also, screw the Pauslons x100.

Thanks for kind words. Would love more and more fringe wrestling fans to join into these conversations! Heavy hands in wrestling is a good thing. It means that a wrestler has a lot of power in his hands to move opponents into scoring positions - IE: push/pull set ups for leg attacks and most commonly when people think of heavy hands it means they are good at snap downs on their opponents. Hand fighting and constant pressure on someones head and neck can be brutal and tiring on them. Brent Metcalf was known for this in his days. And from an ISU wrestler in recent times, Jon Reader was also very good at this. (Both are actually from the same high school in Davison, Michigan)

Agree with you on Colbray, I think it's mostly getting adjusted to the physicality of college wrestling.

Can someone shed some light on Racer's departure from Va Tech? I have never have known the circumstances of that.

I too was thinking we needed to be recruiting hard for an upgrade at 197. Sammy has started to show glimpses of his athletic ability. I think his ceiling is high and if he continues to buy in to what the coaches are preaching, we can't close the door on him! Curious when he/we would know about whether or not he would get a hardship year for last season. Currently, he is a sophomore even though, most of us are treating him as a freshman in eligibility.

I personally thought that Kyven would have been a great volunteer assistant. I am happy that Brent is here, because I think he may have a bright future at coaching as well. If any of our assistants move on, I would hope Kyven gets a shot if he is interested. He is a high character, role model that I would be proud to have on staff!

I wasn't as high on Parker as Storr, but that thinking is starting to shift. Parker is solid in all positions and will continue to excel with this staff. I really like Storr as a kid and hope he does well no matter where he ends up.

I was okay with the Paulson's but never thought they were elite level coaches. I did think they were good recruiters. Maybe they were always pushing the recruiting limits? Hopefully, justice will be had.

I don't know anything about Mackall, so hope you are right. Wrestlers with good offense/setups because of heavy hands will be successful with this staff. It is the "Iowa" way and has been for decades. It is how they wear down their opponents and create offense. I hope Mackall is like Parker in many respects. At the same time, I hope we get Cashman as well!

165 is a tough weight for us right now obviously. We definitely need to find a solution!. I am not sold that Foca will end up at 165. Finding a transfer would help for a year or two, but I think we need to be recruiting another 165 for 2019 commits.

I too am confused about the Colbray eligibility situation. I have heard that he got a hardship year last year, but dont think I ever saw official word from the program. I will see what I can find out.

Kyven is great, and I'd love to have him on staff too in the future. However, right now we are kind of in a win-win situation with him being in the club and associated with all things ISU wrestling plus have all of the current coaches. This is why we need to close on some more high level senior athletes for the club!

We are still in it for Cashman and I really hope we get him too! He is elite. If he was in "high school" still this year, he would be near the top of the rankings and would be considered a blue chip prospect by some.

I agree with your skepticism about Foca being a 165, but that is the plan with the Foca family and the staff.

I listened to zadicks presser this morning and he had good things to say about colbray and how he has changed a lot since Christmas! Colbray sometimes reverts back to his old way but is trying very hard to change that right now and mike said he expects him to shake things up at 197.

I am not sold on wanting Racer at Iowa State. His junior year at Apple Valley and stuff happened and transfered to Bettendorf, then verballed to Virginia Tech and attended for maybe a semester, then ended up at Iowa Central, the verballed to Ohio State and never went there and now at Clackamas.

Solid wrestler, but reasons to be cautious. I am sure Dresser knows that situation with Dayton well and will pursue his if he thinks he is a fit

Downey 2.0, but not near as good at wrestling.

I don't know his story and won't comment on that. But he is a very good talent at our biggest need weight and it would be great to have a bridge gap at the spot for a couple years. The staff would know best about him so I will trust their opinion. He seems to have bounced around a lot (similar to Downey) but it might not be fair to call him Downey 2.0. People don't even know the half of it with PDIII...

Might be in another thread but after the first year with new coaches are there any other kids that will transfer out?
