I smoked for 25 years and could never kick the habit. Went to a local vape shop and bought some of the basics and then within a week bought some better stuff. Right now I have an istick 50watt mod and a Kangetrech Subtank. I started out with 12mg of nicotine and now down to 3mg.

It's definitely not something I would recommend for people who have never smoked but it was the first thing in 25 years that got me away from cigarettes. I've been using it now for about 2 months, It's cheaper, smells better, and I can breath better.

Any other former smokers try it out?

They look nice, but I have no reason to start since I'm not a smoker. They claim to be just water vapor but I always hear people saying that there's other stuff in there that isn't great. I wouldn't know, though.

Congrats, pfg!

I went to vaping about three months ago after smoking for 20ish years. I haven't had a cigarette since. I, too, have notice better health from it.

I smoked for 20+ years and bought a vapor pen. I went with no nicotine right out of the chute. The I haven't smoked since. This weekend will be 1 year. I bought the refillable liquid so it would be as much hassle as possible so I wouldn't like it. Only took about a month to get sick of vapor as well. Plus, I think that people that walk around with vapor pens look like ****** bags. That helped kick it as well.

I think the biggest problem with them, though, is they don't completely stop the problem. It's my understanding that the hardest part to quit (other than the addictive nicotine, obviously) is the hand to mouth motion. It's why people often gain weight when first quitting, because they replace the cigarette hand to mouth with food. This never stops that, so it makes it easier to talk back into that habit again if you don't has that vape pen available for some reason.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great thing because you're not putting all of that tar and stuff into your body, but it doesn't completely solve the problem. I know people who will go pick up a pack of cigarettes because they ran out of the liquid or their battery in their pen is dead, so it didn't solve the problem for them, just replaced it with a less harmful alternative.

For converted smokers, they're great. Ex-smokers are often very considerate and only use them appropriately.

However, for d******** kids that get them because they're 'cool', that's a different story. Example: Last football game. Some p**** next to us in the student section was frequently using his vape to blow obnoxious smoke, and intentionally pointing on blowing it on the other people near him. I see it elsewhere too, people who think they're just invincible with them to do whatever the want because "it's not vapor".

It's not just vapor, it's f****** annoying.

Ex smoker, literally hardest thing I ever did in my life was to stop. Miserable for a year gained over 30 lbs. I would have Vaped if it was available when I quit. Sounds like a wonderful tool.

This reminded me that I use to smoke in the student section circa 1999. That seems quite peculiar now.

Same here as recently as 06 maybe 07. Unfathomable to even think about doing that now but I was in rare form (drunken *******) back then.

Sometimes, replacing with a less harmful alternative is the best option. See methadone. Some people just aren't going to be able to give up cigarettes on their own. So, any help can be a good thing.

I think the biggest problem with them, no offense to those who use them, is that you look like a ****** when using one. Believe me, I know. I really enjoy smoking the occasional tobacco pipe. I only do it alone though, because I know i look like a complete tool smoking a pipe.

By the time my brother was trying it in '10 he was getting yelled at by other students in the student section. Hell he was even all the way at the top in the corner even.

So how much does it cost to start from scratch and set one up? I'm assuming you guys are talking about those bigger ones that look like you're smoking weed or something.

I've tried the Blu e-cigs and whatever those ones they sell at the counter at Kum And Go but they just don't seem to do it for me.

I honestly think they make the regular e-cigs so bad that people will just give up and go back to standard smokes.

I went into a place in Des Moines and said "OK I've smoked for 25 years" set me up. What they sold me cost about $30-$40 including the juice. This was just a little vape pen. All you have to do is worry about filling up the tank once a day or so and every couple of weeks change the coil ($2). They set me up with a juice that tasted tobacco like and had a decent amount of nictoine.

About a week or two later I decided I wanted more so I bought a mod(Big battery on the bottom). This will last about 4 days before it needs to be recharged and you can adjust the wattage so you can do direct lung hits(cloud chasers) instead of mouth to lung like you do with the pen type devices. I also bought a tank that goes on top of the battery that holds more juice (more watts=more juice used) and can handle the watts (lower ohm coil). I've also moved away from the juice that tastes like tobacco and on to some sweet ones and some that actually taste like cereal (Don't knock it until you try it).

A lot of stuff to learn if you want to be a cloud chaser but for the basics the kit for $30 is a good start and it will even fit in your skinny jeans :)

Great Alternatives was the place that got me started and were very helpful but I've also ordered some stuff online. Most of these places have demo tanks that you can try out before you buy the juice.

I was smoking about a pack a day so nearly $50/week so it's really easy to justify spending $30 one time. The juice is usually $10 and will last 4 or 5 days.

You want to get a good one. The cheaper units did nothing for me, especially disposable. I think I spent around $250 to get set up (Provari) with juice and all. Even though I didn't quit entirely, and initially went through a bunch of cartomizers while I figured it out, I saved $750 over the first year. Much more after that.

Also, it dramatically helped my breathing and stamina. Started doing the same workout (after a pause of a few months) and had to ramp it way up as the stuff that had me out of breath barely made me break a sweat.
