Uthoff available?

i've yet to read anything, even speculative, that makes sense regarding why bo ryan blocks ISU for uthoff.

my take? ryan thinks Uthoff is going to be really, really good, and he doesn't want a nearby program taking advantage.

Didn't say the lists were definitive to coaches, but if you think the ratings aren't a reasonably good indication of how good the players are, you're nuts.

Thomas also isn't on ESPN's top 60 list for 2013. Again, not saying he won't be a very good college player, but if you're Bo do you really single out a recruit like that and decide to restrict ISU (and not any of the other schools recruiting Thomas) for that reason? Frankly I don't think he'd do so even if Thomas was a top 50 recruit. Something else is going on in Bo's mind, at least. We'll probably never know what it is, but I seriously doubt it's about Matt Thomas.

It's possible that Utoff told the coaches that part of the reason he was transferring would be more playing time. If that was the case, I could see them restricting ISU, Marquette, and possibly other local BCS level schools as a way of forcing him to stay to his word and not transfer to another "big school".

What? So just because he wants more playing time, he has to go to a mid-major? That's ridiculous. He could go to tons of "big schools" and get more playing time than he would of at Wisconsin.

Scout has Thomas listed as the 22nd best SG in 2013. Bronson Koenig (20th ranked SG) is the last SG in the top 100 at #96. That should put Thomas right around 110 - 115.

FWIW...

So the wisconsin coaching staff is restricting him from going to certain schools? How can they do this? I understand the same conference but honestly why would it matter to the wisconsin coaching staff where he goes and how can they control his decision? I'm sure sure if i'm comprehending this correctly.
It's a condition of releasing him from the scholarship.

"If you want to be released, here's our (the school's and conference's) conditions."

In other words, the school does not have to release anyone from their NLI. Off the top of my head, however, I don't remember the consequences (I think it's 2 years sitting out, or 1 year but pay-their-own-way).

Edit -- someone can correct me or fill in the details . . .

totally speculative here, but no B1G, no Marquette, no ISU. Jarrod wants to appeal. hmmm...that would be either Marquette or ISU that he could want into.....

me thinks Jarrod(an up tempo player) wants to play at ISU now and regrets his decision to go to grind it Bo U and Bo after seeing how exciting ISU ball is to watch and play. Good for us is other recruits did too. :)

Wondering if our rep as Transfer U or maybe some communications between back channels are at play here ala Wes and KY.

this could totally backfire on Bo...Uthoff comes here and pays his own way for a year, which would free up an extra scholarship for this year that Uthoff would have taken..we get Pelle or another high schooler and Lockett....once Lockett leaves Uthoff takes his scholarship.

Would be karma if this happens and it's totally not far fetched to think it could happen.

No way an appeal to Marquette would be granted. It's pretty clear that if Uthoff is appealing its because of a desire to go to ISU.

To whom is Uthoff's "appeal" directed? Wouldn't it have to be internal to UW? If so, a change in the decision seems unlikely, but at least Bo would have to articulate his reasons for the composition of the list. Of course, that would likely not be disclosed publicly as a result of the appeal.

Agreed. I also think that the Uthoff situation may have factored into why Lockett hasn't committed yet as well.

Report: Uthoff to visit Creighton
April 16, 2012 1:02 p.m. - by Tammy Madsen

Jarrod Uthoff will visit Creighton at the end of April, the 6-8 F told the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald. Uthoff, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was granted a release from Wisconsin last week. Uthoff, who redshirted last season, was recruited in high school by Bluejays coach Greg McDermott and former coach Dana Altman, who is now at Oregon. Badgers officials restricted Uthoff from transferring to any Big Ten team, Marquette and Iowa State, but Uthoff appealed the restrictions and will learn the NCAA's decision in a few days.

this would lead me to believe the NCAA decides... not UW.

I have some familiarity with the NCAA rulebook for D-I sports and am not aware of a rule that provides for the NCAA to address this kind of an issue, but I could be wrong. There is a provision allowing for appeals of some transfer-related issues to another body within the University but outside the athletic department. In any event, it'll be interesting to see how the appeal comes out.

Found an interview in which Uthoff said he was appealing the restriction of the release as it relates to Iowa, Indiana and ISU. He said his first level of appeal is to Wisconsin, and he thinks the second level would be to the NCAA. Not sure about the latter.

There is no way they will let him go in conference, that's a pretty common restriction isn't it?

That just leaves ISU on that list.

correct, he would have to sit out 2 years to go to the big 10...either Marquette or Iowa State is the reason he's appealing...guessing Iowa State as Marquette would make sense to restrict them.

I'm still trying to figure out how this works. I thought scholarships are done on a year-by-year basis for the player? Am I wrong? If so, how can a school restrict where a player can sign?
