US vs Jamaica - World Cup qualifying

They went 4-1-2 in the first half for 14 points. Mexico has 14 too, Canada has 12 and Jamaica has 11. Top 3 get in and the 4th goes to a playoff. To be assured of a spot they'll need to do the same, but I would think 24 points should get in, so 10 points (3-3-1) should be okay.

EDIT: Panama is #4, not Jamaica - they only have 6 points.

So winning tonight isn't life or death but makes life a whole lot easier.

It's a bit different this time around. CONCACAF (the confederation for north and central America) has 35 teams. 8 compete in the final round: the top 5 by world FIFA rankings, and 3 of the remaining 30 who emerge from playing each other.

The 5 byes went to: Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Honduras. The 3 who won their way in were Canada, El Salvador, and Panama.

So now the 8 teams in the final round play each of the other 7 home and away, for a total of 14 qualifying games. You get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss. At the end, the top 3 point getters make the World Cup, and the 4th place team goes into a separate inter-confederation playoff where teams from all over the world that just missed out on qualifying play each other for the last few World Cup spots.

So USMNT's goal is to finish in the top 3 of this 8-team tourney right now. Halfway through, we are tied for 1st with 14 points. Mexico also has 14, and Canada has 13. Panama has 11, and no one else has more than 6. We are in very good shape to avoid falling out of the top 4, but we would really rather stay in the top 3 to avoid that second playoff against non-CONCACAF teams.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that! Simple and informative. Appreciate it!

How was it we blew our shot 4 years ago?

It would be an insane collapse if we didn’t get Top 3 at this point. That’s all anyone needs to know.

We managed to finish 5th. 1 point behind Panama and Honduras in 3rd & 4th. That qualifying team got off to a slow start, fired the manager and brought in an old retread to try to get them through. They lacked the experience and leadership required to get points on the road in CONCACAF games.

We entered the final game for 2018 qualifying needing any of the following to happen to make it:

(1) USA wins or ties vs. the worst team in the tournament (Trinidad & Tobago),
(2) Honduras ties or loses,
(3) Panama ties or loses.

We just needed one of those three things. We lost to T&T, Honduras won, and Panama won. Honduras and Panama were playing the two BEST teams in the tournament and they still both won.

It was very, very bad luck paired with that team just not being very good. The qualifying tournament was smaller then (called the "hex" because it was only 6 teams instead of 8 now) so you only played 10 games - and I think we only won 3 of the 10. Compare that to the 7 we have played so far this year - we already have 4 wins, and still 7 more games to play.

Oh that's right. Didn't it come down to a winnable game we just had to win and we blew it?

Matt Turner stops that

No shot. The USMNT guys from The Athletic are at the game and said neither would have a chance. That being said, its a tough situation with Steffen not getting games at Man City. Will be really interesting considering Man City is out of the Cabarao Cup, games in which he usually plays.
