Update on replacing T.J. Otzelberger

But ... the coaching aspect of assistant coaches is over-rated IMO.

The general job description of assistants:

1) Recruiting 50%
2) Video tape/game prep/scouting 20%
3) Off-season development/skill work 10%
4) Keeping players eligible 10%
5) Strategic X's & O's development 10%

With the head coach having almost the inverse.
So does this look about right for a head coach?

1) Recruiting 50%
2) Video tape/game prep/scouting 80%
3) Off-season development/skill work 90%
4) Keeping players eligible 90%
5) Strategic X's & O's development 90%

Yikes. No wonder those guys make the big bucks.

We talkin' 'bout Assistant coaches? Assistant coaches? I get that its important and we need them but we talkin' bout Assistant coaches.

Is anybody else starting to think we need to fire Fred immediately because he doesn't understand how to put a staff together? And to think until I read this thread I was totally happy with Fred as a coach.

Ahh perspective. Fancy meeting you here.

Wrong. 50% = 1/2 thus the inverse is 2 or 200%.

Pardon my mathgasm. :spinny:

I wonder if people neglect to recall the fact, Sadler was recruiting basketball players to Nebraska.....I feel like that's trying to recruit football players to Indiana...He did well at UTEP, going 48-18 in 2 seasons in the WAC and CUSA...

Good luck to TJ. Jim Shaw has been an assistant at Washington for 9 years, and hasn't sniffed a head coaching position either. I can understand that a change was necessary for TJ, but I'm not sure that his dream will become more realistic at Washington. I'm surprised he didn't try to move as an assistant to a more elite school. Self, Calipari, Coach K etc would have been thankful to have him on their staff.

Doc isn't all that old. He's got a reputation for being old, and I am not sure where that is coming from. Maybe it's because he just looks old. Maybe it;s because he has been around for so long.

In all seriousness, what evidence do we have to say that Doc isn't a good recruiter?
Both Frank Solich and Doc Sadler had several years of tough times closing the recruiting deal at Nebby. The major talent went elsewhere. No one ever questioned his coaching ability. McD was a better recruiter, yet his 400 plays were not as good as Doc's X and Os. Doc worked his players very hard in practice to build up their nitty gritty assertiveness.

Not trying to argue with you, but essentially all we have to base his recruiting on is how well he recruited at Nebraska? A school that isn't known for top basketball talent by any means.

I don't know who you are trying to argue with here. You'll be hard pressed to find a person on here that doesn't think losing TJ was a big loss. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't think TJ was a fantastic recruiter and coach. You'll be hard pressed to find a person that wished he would have stayed.

That being said, we are Iowa State fans first. So obviously we try and convince ourselves that all will not be lost with him leaving. Do you want us all to freak out and cry about it? It is perfectly fair to point out that we have another assistant who is doing a pretty good job recruiting. We have a 3rd assistant who hasn't done much yet, but at least has us in the conversation for some elite talent in Minnesota.

And we have a head coach who at least does a good enough job that the players that apparently TJ did all of the work on are still coming and staying at Iowa State. When McDermott left, Melvin wanted TJ to stay otherwise he wasn't sure he'd end up at Iowa State. While Thomas and Custer are disappointed, both were OK with things.

So I guess I wish I knew what you were angling for.....we all appreciate what TJ did. But we can't just pine over him for the next 5 years.

From what I've gathered from this thread is that Sadler didn't recruit to Nebraska, only his assistants did. And they Sadler was a great recruiter when he was an assistant, because that's how you get promoted.

I never had to take a course in logic so would it be better for Chris to make the pickup bet or buy a lottery ticket for Saturday night?

I did take a course in probability. If we knew how many candidates were interviewed, and their qualifications we could lay odds on whether Doc Sadler will be the odds on favorite for the job. Then someone could bet a trifecta with their car, pickup and boat.

Somehow this twisted logic is very logical.
