Update on Harrison Barnes

Yes, Shirley Barnes (Harrison's mom) works as the ensemble secretary in the department of music. She makes sure the that groups like the ISUCF"V"MB and the Pep Bands are able to perform at ISU sporting events. She's a great person and is friendly every time I talk to her (I was a music major). I never ask her about her son though, since I'm sure everyone else in town does. I used to see him a lot in the music building. In fact, Harrison plays (at least used to when I substituted at AHS) saxophone for the Ames High School Band Program. He's a bright, well-rounded kid. If we can get this kid, he'll bring talent and brains to the table.

Maybe we shouldn't be worrying about Kansas or USC - and instead watch out for Vanderbilt or Stanford.

If he is really considering this, I don't think that is a very good decision. If you have NBA talent the NBA will find you. With all the players drafter from high school or Europe, being "discovered" at any Big 12 school shouldn't be a problem. Take K-State for example, not exactly a draft pick factory, but that wasn't a problem for Beasley.

For the level of success we have had on the court, we have actually done pretty well for getting players drafted. I think the issue with them not having lasting NBA careers has been more of an issue of the players we had drafted didn't have natural position fits in the NBA.

Great post, and great point to bring up. Fact of the matter is that if he has the skills for an NBA position, he'll be in the NBA, especially if he chooses at least a visible school.

I really hope we can land him. There's no other fan base in the country that would give him the kind of support we would. I highly doubt he'll end up at TCU. If he's planning on going to any non-elite program I would think he would come to ISU. Of course I don't know him, this is all speculation, but that's my prediction. I know its been mentioned, but I think it would be awesome if a bunch of Cyclone Alley showed up at one of his bigger games to cheer for him. It'd be a good way to show support for him, not to mention it'd just be awesome to see him play. I'd totally be up for that. I agree that if he hadn't grown up in Ames there would be no chance in hell we could land him. So why not use that to our advantage and do what we can to show him some home town support? Just a thought

Yeah, Shirley is awesome. She's really nice. I haven't met Harrison before, but he very obviously comes from good family.

A bunch of us were talking about this at work yesterday. We all pretty much agreed that if we were in a position to go ANYWHERE it would be really hard to say no to a place like Stanford or Duke...

By this point in time Harrison Barnes should be wearing down. First it was the Nike Hoop Jamboree, then it was the NBA Top 100 camp, after a quick respite he was off to the LeBron James Skills Academy, and now the Kentucky HoopFest. Despite all of that basketball Barnes is no worse for the wear, and that was very obvious on Thursday.

Some kids can just stand out in warm ups, and Barnes is one of them. He has a long athletic build and a perfect release on his jumper that makes onlookers think every shot has to go in.

Playing against the M33M Canada CIA Bounce squad, Barnes simply dominated for All Iowa Attack. Despite having to be a center, and guard a bruiser down low, Barnes held his own on the defensive end, and really did anything he wanted on the offensive end. It started with him going to the rim using both his right and left hands. Then he decided a step back three in a defender's eye was on the docket, and finally an athletic transition slam finished things off.

M33M simply had no answer for Barnes. He finished the game with 25 points, nearly half of his team's total, and continued to show why he quickly becoming one of the most sought after kids in the class.

Barnes is attracting a huge crowd these days. As always Iowa head man Todd Lickliter and Iowa State boss Greg McDermott were front and center, but they were joined by assistants from Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, Georgia Tech, Georgetown, Illinois, Nebraska, LSU, Notre Dame, Louisville, Arizona State, Kentucky, DePaul, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Ah, I knew his mom was connected to the university, but I didn't know how. I was involved in the music program in my time at Iowa State and spoke with her many times. She really is a fantastic person and a valuable member of that department.
