Update on Harrison Barnes

Interesting that I can find out his mother is a secretary in the Department of Music from an Kentucky newspaper but all I ever learned on the boards is that she "works at ISU".

I wonder how much style of play has to figure. McD was a slow-tempo offense and defensive oriented. That style of play is fine for College Basketball, but does translate into NBA-readyness. (Especially since most of our set plays are actual NBA plays.) Barnes has to be a future NBA prospect. Won't he want to be on a team that runs up and down and court and puts up 80ppg? (He would be at ISU)

I get tired of reading about "tempo"...the game of basketball is more complicated then "tempo"...The staff does what they have to do...to give us a chance to win. Which changes from game to game.

Like it or not is is something that recruits DO look at. When they see guards passing the ball around 35 feet from the hoop untill the shot clock runs down it certainly isn't filling their heads with thoughts or rim rattling transition dunks...

I don't think McDermott plays a slow-down style. I think people that think that do not know a thing about basketball. Last year 3 of our best players were hurt. Therefore, we were forced to slow it down a little bit.

Remember when Tim Floyd was hired.......during his introductory press conference, he came out and said that he hated zone defense and that he liked to play slow-down basketball.

McDermott has never said anything like that. And if we get some players that finally decide to stick around and bother to learn the game, then we will run.

Shouldn't the recruits realize it partially the fault of the players who don't have the skill to get it inside. I am pretty sure that Greg McDermott does not want them to throw up a 3 at the shot clock, but at some point players need to make plays.

It's been mentioned before, several posters know her personally.

Tempo/Style is more a fan thing...This is why the staff is recruiting kids who "understand" what the staff is trying to accomplish. We will get out in transition, when the staff feels it's an advantage...If the staff feels it's an advantage to get into a half court set, we will do that...there is no line drawn, we don't have to do one or the other.

In order to run with the ball, you need to have someone who can run it. I think most will agree with me that Diante could play uptempo, but we didn't have many players around him who could due to injury or just being jump shooters. The other issue was that I don't think it was the best thing for Diante. Get him to learn to run within the offense when he's a freshman, and then open it up as he matures. He had a few turnovers playing half court offense, which would have undoubtedly increased had we ran. Running is high risk high reward. We didn't have the personnel to make it feasible so we slowed down and tried to make games low scoring to give us a chance to win. I'm sorry but if we try and run against Texas, Augustin and Abrams would have had a field day. We slowed the game down and took them out of their game and they just found a way to pull it out. We were in that game because we didn't make too many mistakes.

McD's first year our rosters had athletes such as: Clark, Talyor, Wes Johnson, Jiri and we ran the same offense.

Most of his offense is based on set plays, getting the ball into the half court offense and executing. That is what he does best.

I don't claim to know a whole lot about coaching or knowing the ins and outs of basketball. I do know how to read stats though.

In 2008 ISU's pace was 240th in the country.
In 2007 it was 233rd.
In 2006 UNI's pace was 323rd. (with an extremely veteran team)
2005 was 236th.
2004 was 246th.

I'm not saying it's impossible for ISU to speed up a bit. But every available statistic to this point shows that McD coached teams havne't run. He said that his teams were going to get out and run a bit when he was hired. We haven't seen it yet, so I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, the assertation that ISU will score 80 ppg is completely insane.

Me thinks Greg might want to switch to more up tempo if he had Dykstra and Barnes. Coaches must adjust too.

McD Coaches Teams PPG/FG % since 2003

2003-2004 - 69 PPG/ 44% from the field
2004-2005 - 72 PPG/ 48% from the field
2005-2006 - 66 PPG/ 45% from the field
2006-2007 - 64 PPG/ 40% from the field
2007-2008 - 64 PPG/ 42% from the field

Uptempo teams don't have a ppg that low while shooting that high of a FG%.

He's a system guy that recruits players who understand his system and are willing to play within it.

That has been what the utmost loyalist have preached over and over. I have a feeling that Mike Taylor and Clark were just as good of athletes as Dykstra and Barnes and we didn't run at all. We turned one of the most athletic players we have ever seen into a jump shooter who had very little impact on the offense at all.

the reason rashon Clark had success early in his career was because he had descent guards to pass him the ball (blalock and stinson). You can't play this I
slow offense unless your defense is amazing and you can shoot lights out. And with the fast pace with most big 12 teams it will be tough to do. Btw IMO I hate the offense we run. It takes the athleticism out of the game. Just like another guy said earlier it took one the schools most athletic players and turned him into a jumpshooter. Which isn't his game. Hopefully mcdermott will pull something. Out of his ace so he won't get canned

I'd love to be optimistic about our chances to land Barnes - but I'm not. I hope he does come here yet I'll wish him luck regardless.

The more I hear/read, the more I think we're on the outside looking in.

It all starts with the PG. We haven't had a true or solid PG since Greg has taken over. It is hard to get up and run when your PG is getting caught from behind and can never get to the paint.

Our business school isn't anything special, and I don't see big things in the near future for our bball program. I don't really see us contending for a big 12 title anytime soon, let alone a Final Four.

At this point, this kid has the game and the smarts to go to a school that can offer a top 10 business program and a top 10 basketball program. Not only that, he can do it in places that are much more exciting than his hometown of Ames IA. If he wasn't from Ames I don't even think we would be on his radar.

Basically, looking at what he says he wants versus what we offer, it just boils down to two words: He gone.
