Update on BB

obviously you know BCS means nothing in basketball but Bradley wasn't "BCS" so it would be okay to just find a strong program I think.

Whoops, thanks for catching that. Yes, a strong program is what I meant. We could also try to find a Big East team, since there are plenty. The Boston College series a few years ago was entertaining, I wouldn't mind doing that again.

And I hate my long arms for it. I could only imagine how far Jiri would have to go.

No kidding. I am 6'5" and it makes me sick when I see guys pile the weight on only to lift it all of 6 inches off their chest when I am pushing it a good foot and a 2 feet +.

So those pre-draft bench numbers were for 185 lbs. and not 225 lbs. I hate to say it but that is really sorry. Wasn't the best on there only in the low twenties or something? Jiri wouldn't have even been able to start practicing with ole' Eustachy until he could put up 300 (unless there was a helpful asst. there to give him an invisible spot).

I would crap myself if Tyray Pearson could bench 200 pounds one time.

Did big guys seriously have to bench 300 to play for Eustachy?

That's what we were told. Big men had to put up 300 and guards 250 before you were able to start practicing with the team. Obviously not everyone could do that, but some asst. coaches were very helpful during the testing. Alot of guys owe a debt of gratitude to Terry Carroll.

Wouldn't having longer arms make it more difficult from a pure leverage standpoint? Never mind how much further the weight must be lifted, think about how much more stress there would be on a person's muscles with he weight further out.

Leverage as in lifting horizontal YES...but when your bench-pressing there is no lever arm as to make it a larger moment. If you hang a 25 lb weight on a cable that is 5 ft long it is going to feel the same as if the 25 lb weight was hung on a 10 ft long cable.

I'm glad to see others using the excuse that I use - long arms... I have never really tried to put of 185, or work toward it but I assume I can't do it. I would also say, however, that as a D1 athlete who is expected to spend a fair amount of time conditioning it shouldnt take long to get there and beyond. I will also agree with whoever said that I would rather see strong legs, good balance and great footwork. I have guarded a lot of guys in the post that out weighed me by plenty but a stable stance and some resistance in the right places screwed them up plenty (we are talking scrub rec league crap here to be fair).

Just to follow up on KG from today at State Gym.....Craig said is currently btwn 230-235 and there doesn't seem to be a lot of fat. He is definitely busting his *** to get bigger for next year.

DG said he is up 10lbs from the end of the season, eventhough he didn't have on bball shoes and was working with kids most of the time, he definitely looks bigger.

Lucca is leaving tonight to go home to Germany, and relax....he will be back!

Lucca is heading to Decatur, IL tonight to spend time with his host family whom he lived with last year. He is flying out to Germany on Thursday.

Xavier Thames, although very open about his favorites in ISU and WSU, has also recently been receiving and showing alot more attention to Marquette. Don't be surprised if he mentions them in the running of his whereabouts.

In regards to Creekmur, from Marshalltown, he is being looked at by the likes of Washington State, UCLA, and other schools amongst the west coast after playing on the Los Angeles Prospects AAU team last summer in Los Angeles. Obviously, he is seeing a lot of attention in the state of Iowa, including Drake and Iowa as previously posted, however; only has two current scholarship offers from North Dakota State and Creighton. He was invited and attended the North Carolina Elite Camp three weekends ago in NC.

I'm 6'5" and its tough lifting weights. The guys with short arms can lift a ton

Exactly, thats why bodybuilders and a lot of powerlifters are no taller than 6 feet. They have the perfect levers.

On a note concerning Jiri's bench press, Strength coaches train on "specificity" of a sport. Not many basketball players are pushing with their arms, either standing up or on their back. The bench press is more important for an OT in football. I'm not saying it isn't important, but there are plenty of other lifts way more important for a basketball player to develop over the BP. Namely, strengthening his shoulders, hips, hamstrings, quads, and core.

On another note concerning Brackins' weight gain. It is very possible to gain a lot of lean muscle mass quickly. Especially directly after the season. Most strength coaches will train for "hypertrophy" (increasing muscle size) during the post-season. More than likely the players haven't been weight training, very hard, for the past 6 months. During season would have been more maintanence, etc. But, when those players stop playing ball and focus on the weight room, they can stack on muscle mass extremely fast. Their bodies are different than ours and they train a lot different than the average person.
