UofI not paying contractors, AGAIN

I'd like to know if Iowa still employs their project managers because there had to be some serious change orders.

I have a personal connection to the childrens hospital and the people that work there are phenomenal. But this, this is just so pathetic.
The project management for the university used to have a hospital group and a university group. The hospital project managers all got absorbed or removed. The university took over all project management.

Wife had a friend do this, took three times to finally take hold. Huge emotional hit and financial hit. After the first kid, they managed to have two kids the "old-fashioned" style. Must have primed the pump or something.
Took us 3 times as well. The financial hit sucked ass but in the end I would pay that 100x over to have another kid.

I don't get it. The court orders U of I to pay the contractor, but still refuses to do so. Modern Piping is not helping themselves though saying they won't provide the documents again until the U of I apologizes. Sounds childish to me when you are talking that kind of money.

I also don't understand the need for an "apology." It makes it seem that there is something much deeper and personal going on. Could there be a CyHawk tension underneath it all?

UI and the Regents publicly accused Modern Piping of extortion. MP says it already provided the documents that UI is asking for.

I thought it sounded like Modern Piping gave them the documents. Iowa signed off that they had received them (last fall?) and now are saying they don't have them. I don't believe anything that is said coming from the U of I side.

And if this pharmacy building cost is an additional $4 mil, what about other future buildings? Are each of those going to be more expensive?

Sure, especially since the bidders will know they don't have to compete against the big local guy, they don't have to submit as economical a bid as they would have otherwise.

It's definitely something you would be able to document you had transmitted to the owner. If the contract requires you to provide them in order to get paid, you provide them, and get a receipt.

If the University is going to take the unusual step of not accepting the bid of a contractor or subcontractor, they should notify that contractor before hand. Contractors spend an enormous amount of time (money) preparing a bid. To allow a bidder to spend all that time when you know you will not accept their bid is unconscionable.

I thought i read somewhere in the articles that the documents were not in the right format. I think U of I is trying to move the goalpost.

Anymore, those type of document submittals are done through an electronic construction management portal. Especially on a project that large where there were likely thousands of submittals of various types happening. Those portals do a pretty good job of only accepting the correct format (assuming they are set up correctly). They also provide a good track record that the submittal happened, on what day, time, etc. Being that UofI has lost every legal battle related to this so far, accusing them of "moving the goalposts" might be being generous.

I liked the ending quote:“Within 24 or 48 hours after we have this vote, we ought to know whether this is extortion or not,” McKibben said. “If they don’t come up with (the documents), it’s either one of two things. They either didn’t do it, don’t have it, or they’re extorting us. I can’t see it any other way.”<<< or maybe you lost/deleted them on accident and don't wan't to admit the screw up....
