Shocking...
OK jwr, lets go through this...I never worry about offers in football, because Iowa State will always end up on the short end of the stick with that everytime.
However, since 5fan decided to start a thread about how awsome your hawks are recruiting, and since they are after all iowa. A closer look at this record setting haul has to acknowledge who they have beaten out for these players.
Now, kirkie has a good track record of developing players, so I am sure they will be fine. BUT, for the vast majority of these kids, iowa was their best offer.
So in your estimation, kirkie beating out kent state means that the kid is a player, and CPR beating out kent state means that Iowa State is recruiting poorly.
Just want to make sure I understand...
Had some work to do. Just read that...it's an interesting strategy. I guess I circle back around to the notion that I don't think they are going to put out timelines for the sake of it...they are offering kids they have targeted early and getting a lot of them. Also, I think they are getting to the point now where the boat is getting pretty full.
I don't know that they can take all that many more commits the rest of the way this year, based upon who is slated to be on scholarship next year.
Sorry to break up the boner jams over Iowa recruiting but I have a couple legit questions;
How many more commits is Iowa taking in this class (currently @ 15)?
Of the remaining spots what positions are they looking to fill?
TIA
Not sure if a new coach would have much influence but OC Greg Davis might of brought some tactics from Texas with him. The Longhorns notoriously have had a bushel of early commitments annually, seemingly finish their recruiting season faster annd earlier than most other programs in the countryThink about it another way...Iowa is not one of the Top ten elite programs in the game....I dont think they have the sort of cachet to throw around related to several time sensitive offers.
as it's hard to tell how many walk-ons have been given a scholarship. My guess is somewhere around 20, but that's just a guess.
At this point, I would say Iowa would be taking best player they can find, regardless of position.
Sure but there must be areas of need you see as a fan. What are they?
I just dont get too high or low about recruiting. Learned that lesson in 2005. Now, I think the 2009 and 2010 classes were pretty weak...and Iowa is going to pay a price this year IMO due to some of that and DL attrition. The last two classes have seemed faster on the whole.
It's just not something I see as worth getting too high or too low about. I am intrigued by this pace, no doubt, given their track record at developing players and identifying talent. However, as has always been the case and probably lways will be, Iowa's margin for error is very small...cant afford a lot of misses and or injuries.
But iowa is the best offer that almost every one of these recruits has. You are beating out a lot of MAC schools for these kids.
I know I know, as soon as Nick Saban sees that kirkie is on somebody, he will fly in personally to offer. That wasn't aimed at you Jon, just one of the mensa candidate hawk fans that pollute this site.
A lot of guys from the 2005 class helped Iowa win the Orange Bowl a few years ago, so I wouldn't say there's any lesson to be learned there. You could say that class lived up to its hype.

That class was rated Top 10 in the nation...a 24 man class. 14 of the 24, or nearly 60%, never made it to senior day. Two of them (Kanellis and Blum) were due to injuries. Several others were due to grades. Five of those 14 were rated four-star players.
Of the class, the players who made significant contributions to the 2009 team were: Trey Stross, Dace Richardson, Tony Moeaki, Kyle Calloway and Pat Angerer. That's 5 out of 24. Yanda was a Juco transfer who was done years earlier and Greene left in 2008, but he was really a 2004 signee who then had to go to Milford Academy for one year after HS. I did not include Yanda or Greene in the 14 number from above.
So to get five, or six at most players making regular and winning contributions from one recruiting class that was the highest rated in school history or at least since the late 1980's? That's a disappointment in my book.
so you are saying that your hoks would have won the 1st BCS level bowl in your lifetime without them? those guys that made it to senior day made a pretty significant impact on the team.
Iowa's class to date would be the best recruiting class in the history of Iowa State.
Yet FreeRents continues to hover around .500 or WORSE against ISU.
Good value there
