The NCAA Committee just doesn't appreciate how talented that UNLV team really is. :twitcy:

unlv has had 4 straight years recruiting in the top 30 by class (yahoo). why not let him bring in major talent again (somehow)? then fire him early enough that the new coach can convince the new recruits to stay and also maintain new relationships rice gains over the next 8 months.

not exactly a textbook way to go about it, but at the very least rice can recruit and that will give potential coaches something to look seriously at.

You know he's gotta be watching our games. Probably saw our run to the BigXII tournament title and wil be watching us play in the NCCA Tournament this week. Did UNLV make the NIT, or even the CBI?

Nope but Colorado made the CBI!

All the more amazing that Fred does what he does without any high-level, early first-round NBA talent, too. I guess the closest we have is Monte, but he's still small and I've never seen him more than a late first-round pick next year, not this year.

Poor RV. Has to be kicking himself playing ugly streetball in half-empty gyms in random, underpopulated Western states when he could have been a hero in Hilton on a team that almost won a major conference, won the conference playoff, in front of a screaming atmosphere and now a #3 in the NCAA tournament. Such a better experience, more attention to him as a player, and a better situation to come into. The roster had an open slot in the back-court--a starting gig that was his to lose, that eventually went to BDJ/Naz at the 2. Morris, Vaughn, Hogue, Niang, McKay was probably the plan all along for Fred, though our current guards did just fine.

Just some fun comparisons...

UNLV
---
68.2 PPG (154th)
13.7 APG (89th)
137th in adjusted tempo according to KenPom

ISU
--
78.4 PPG (14th)
16.2 APG (11th)
15th in adjusted tempo according to KenPom*

*the fastest in a major conference save for Arkansas (1st), UNC (2nd), and LSU (3rd)

Vaughn did get better as the year went along and put up some nice stats in conference...

18.3 PPG
41.6% from three
55.6% eFG
23.3 PER

...which is on-par with McKay (23.9) and Morris (21.6), which the advance stats love for their efficiency, and better than Niang and BDJ (who both had some trouble with turnovers, a no-no, and have higher usage ratings for when they're on the court).

He would have been a nice addition and had plenty of chances to shine, though I'm not sure on net we're any different for it (BDJ still does plenty for us on offense, Naz is just as good a shooter, and Fred runs the offense through Niang and McKay more as a consequence).

Definitely his loss...
