Unless Fran...

I stated in my OP that I realize we are going to be really really bad next year too. This is the in-state rivals forum and I am talking about the Hawks. During last season I thought that Iowa was horrible but that they would be decent (maybe NIT) the next year as they return a lot and have a decent class coming in. Now I think you can argue that they may be just as bad as last year. They lost their best player and top 2 recruits.

Iowa has more options on the roster this year... I don't see how they can't be better than what they showed in their 10 win performance last season.

Lost their best player in Fuller. Lost their best recruits. I don't think they have one recruit that can come in and start for them. So they essentially have the same roster as last year...minus their best player. I see similar Big 10 record for the Hawks. 4 wins?

It's not a major point...

but I would be shocked if Basabe is not starting this year. It's conceivable that Brommer or Cougill could start at the 4, but Fran is looking for the future so why not put Basabe in there and let him learn?

Not that it makes Iowa anything more than a possible .500 team next year. I could see Iowa winning anywhere from 2 to 7 Big 10 games, and wouldn't be surprised by a 4-win conference season.

Melsahn was getting looks from Big East schools after being released from his LOI at Siena, along with teams like Boston College and Texas.

Don't kid yourself, if Texas wanted the kid, they would have just taken him...whether he was committed to Sienna or not.

You keep saying that Iowa lost their best player in Fuller... well, he certainly was Iowa's best power forward, but as far a best player, I think you could have made a case for May and Gatens as well.

Another thing, we are not going to be trying to run that Butler system any longer... I would say that system was more to blame in keeping down offensive production than the actual talent level of the team. We'll see how these players perform in a uptempo system this season.

As far as recruits.... Cody Larson was a big loss in my opinion, but to say the Brust was on the the two best recruits... I would take Marble over Brust any day. Brust may have been good... but Marble brings more scoring creativity to the table than Brust. Basabe will fill the void somewhat by the departure of Fuller... he's probably more athletic than Fuller and will get those garbage buckets around the hoop that Fuller got. He should also be a threat on the fastbreak.

Just one more item... Jarryd Cole's production was almost identical to Fuller's in about the same amount of minutes played... so the loss of Fuller might not be as profound as some might think. Iowa has the players to overcome the loss of Fuller... that being said, I was disappointed to see Fuller leave.

If Fran is half as smart as I think he is, he's going to open things up for Gatens and May. Short term, he has to. Those two are the only guys that can consistently make plays for this team. I couldn't believe how poorly Lick used Gatens, but then again, as the only real outside or penetrating threat, he was often shaded or sometimes double-teamed, but those occasions weren't often.

And Marble would have been near plan F.

Correct. I don't know where Hawk fans all of the sudden think Marble is something special? Nobody wanted him... except mid-majors and Iowa... that was it.

It would be like ISU getting Grayer's boys right now. Nobody is really that interested in them, but their dad was a star here... so why not?

You guys are too funny.... Marble is gonna tear it up.

I should show you my HS highlight reel. It's awesome too! But I didn't get any offers anywhere.

I still can't believe Marble choose Iowa over his offers from Detroit, Fairfield, Buffalo, and Dayton? I wonder why UNC and Duke didn't come after him?

If Marble would have opened up his recruiting after Iowa made it's coaching change, majors would have been all over him.... my point stands... Marble > Brust.

Better luck next time.

Youre right...I totally misworded what I meant to say...3 returning scholarship players!...Big difference! At least ISU can rest their worries, they have an experienced coach...Come on, open your eyes. Iowa has a very good chance of being much better than ISU. The Cyclones have lost way too much this off season, and even in his first year, no matter how good he could become, Hoiberg is going to have a huge battle ahead of him.
